Power strop question

Hi all,

I just orderd a Lee Valley leather belt for my belt sander. My question is, do you put the honing compound on the rough side of the belt or the smooth side?

Depending on the finish, much of the honing compound can be buried (below the surface) in the "rough" side. If the compound doesn't touch the knife, it's wasted.

I use the smooth side to hone with. I charge it with white rouge and get quite a bit of use until I need or recharge again...
