I recently picked up a Powerlock and was a bit surprised to find the knife blade (partially serrated) only sharpened on one side.

Can someone fill me in on the utility of this and how to care for it?

Thanks,

Chap

I believe it's a chisel ground blade, which means that is how it is supposed to look. I am terrible at sharpening, so you don't want my advice in that arena.

For what it's worth I just use my Lansky kit to sharpen mine.
Not the serrated part, but that doesnt get used too much on mine so it's still fairly sharp.
With the lansky I can get to the point of shaving arm hair pretty quickly. I use mine so much that I have to touch it up everyother month or so. 6+ years and still going strong.

Thanks for the input folks.

I don't know a lot about these things, so I'm wondering why you sharpen a blade like that. I'm not arguing SOG's success, just wondering why a blade would be made that way as opposed to a more traditional manner.

I believe it is so that the blade is easier to sharpen. That is to say, you only have to sharpen one side to keep your edge going. I'm not a huge fan of the chisel grind, myself. I too just picked up a Power Lock to go along with my multi-tool collection. Wonderful tool! However, I plan on purchasing a plain edged knife blade from SOG and installing it on my PL. I believe these blades are also chisel ground, so I will be re-profiling the edge on a grinder.

I have had success keeping the chisel ground blades sharp with sand paper on a mouse pad or even just a few licks down a butcher's steel followed by some old leather.
