I bought the plain edge Viele because it was "smooth" in looks and in action. Just returned from the Eastern Sierras and have more respect for the knife now. I got to clean a few Lake Crowley red meat Lahontan trout with it, and it gutted and beheaded them great. The open tapered design of the rear of the handle with the sharp-edged liners worked great at digging out the bloodline and the thumb purchase grooves at the top of the blade did scaling duty.(I might extend them out to where the blade tapers) And it worked just as well on a med/rare porterhouse.
My wife grabbed the Moran before we left because it was pretty, but after effortlessy dissecting a whole chicken, she will not return it. Used it in the camp kitchen a lot. I need a different sheath now as she does not wear a belt most of the time.
My LW Goddard trimmed some low branches for tent clearance, made hot dog sticks, and whittled a plug to repair a bent aluminum tent pole section.
They all performed well and are still sharp.
My LM Wave was used many times also.(I am looking forward to trying a Spyderench)
Now about the smell of the micarta on my Viele........I like it (butt I'm a fish)
