Practicality of keeping one in car

I read that someone carries his in case he had to be cut out of the car seat belt. I dont intend to carry one on me, in my pockets, but do you carry in your glove compartment, or arm rest? Any police problems?

I'm assuming that we're talking knives here?

I keep a small fixed blade in my glove compartment and a small pocketknife in my armrest. I've never done anything to warrant getting pulled out of my car or having my car searched so no, no problems with leo.

Why would you not carry a knife in your car if you intend to EDC it? If you don't intend to put it in your pocket to use then why have it? I EDC a firearm and usually 2 knives. I usually have the same in my car. Everything in my car is legal and my knives are legal for personal carry. I have a CWP for personal carry of guns or knives over 4". Here in Florida it is not a problem. Where do you live?
This discussion may be better off over in the "Knife Laws" section.

I've occasionally put a knife in my center console. But, I've almost ALWAYS got at least 2 folders on me (in pocket) anyways. My assumption is that, if I'm in an accident that requires me (or somebody) to cut me out of my seatbelt, I'm probably not going to be able to reach anything in the console or glovebox anyway. It's likely that any/all articles inside the vehicle will be scattered all over creation anyway in a wreck, so whatever's stashed in the console or glove box won't likely be there anymore.

With regard to legal/police issues, that just depends on the jurisdiction you happen to be in at any particular moment. Carry at your own risk.

LawyerSam, carry what knives you like in your pockets, but for the car, for accident extraction (seat belt cutter & glass breaker) use the right tool: ResQMe. Hang one off every car key chain.

I think it all depends on where you live & the laws there. If there's no issue, then have a "tool" handy. The one Esav posted a link to looks ideal.

I always have a knife or 3 on me (Along with a handgun), but if you don't want to carry one on you, then having one handy in the car works, too.

I do keep a knife in the car, too. Different one in each car so I don't have to keep remembering to bring it with me. For my personal car it's a Becker BK10 Crewman with a multi-tool in the pouch. I figure that combo would come in handy if I got stranded somewhere.

Good luck & welcome to BladeForums, BTW.

Sam, there are huge variations in both laws and the enforcement of the laws. I'm assuming that you are middle class and conventional in appearance. You are most unlikely to be hassled over minor technical violations of the law. Nobody is going to be measuring your blades to see if they are an eighth inch over the legal limit or looking for a technical concealed weapons charge.

Those of us outside the mainstream do have to think of such things.

I keep a small fixed blade inside the car in the door next to the driver's side.

Just in case.

Keep a CV sodbuster in my car at all times. I had an old Saab 900 that stranded me once when one of the (yup, it had 2 alternator belts) alternator belts broke and wound its way into the other. I didn't have my edc on me that morning and I didn't have one in the car. If i had a knife i could have cut the broken one out and made it home on the second. I will always have a knife in my automobile from now on.

I keep stuff in my car just cuz I'm in the woods so much with my dogs that it pays to have things handy. I've got a heatsheet and a FAK in my console and I keep a Maxpedition M1 bag on my seat with a ZDP D4, a DMT sharpener, a Streamlight, spare batteries, a Leatherman, some matches and another firestarter, and a couple of other things in it. It's real easy to gab that stuff and go if I need to and it's easily in reach if I'm in the car.

Then there's my EDC in my pocket or on my belt.

I keep my leatherman wave, a small SAK, a flashlight some kind of food and water in my car at all times.
There are a few more tids and bits just to make things a bit more comfortable if I was to break down in the middle of nowhere.
Growing up in the sticks I learned to be self-sufficient and always be prepared.
It really amazes me how few people are prepared for something that might occur that wasn't in their game plan.

be careful to know what your laws are, I got tagged for carrying a concealed weapon for having a six inch fixed blade in the car. also it depends in the Officer some are cooler than others.

I have a standard SAK in the armrest, and a little larger folder in my tool roll under the back carpet. I haven't had a need for anything else.

thx - cpr

we (family vehicle) have a hammer multi-tool in the center console of the car (van), but nothing other than that (although I do have a flashlight I have been planning on putting in there), all I have is my edc blades...

But, once I get my truck fixed and on the road, I plan on keeping a rescue knife in there (because it has electric windows).

edit: I forgot, I do have a Gerber LMF II seatbelt cutter in the FAK thats in the family vehicle.

My vehicle is a 400cc motor scooter - what would I do if I broke down in the middle of nowhere on a cold night? I keep a survival blanket and a first aid kit under the seat and I carry on me a SAK, LM, lighter, flashlight and a few other useful tools. I figure the survival blanket is something that everyone riding a motorcycle should have since they don't have shelter like in an enclosed vehicle. You can't assume you will always have a cellphone signal when you need one.

I keep an Ontario machete, a hatchet and a hockey mask in my trunk, mainly just because I'm a sketchy individual. GI tanto in my glove.

I'd carry a full sized automobile in my Emergency Kit, just to be on the safe side... ;)

Trunk is a different matter. In most jurisdictions, you can carry pretty much anything you want in the trunk. I'm rural so I have a pile of stuff in there. Axe, machete, bow saw, chain, rope, entrenching tool, wire, duct tape, tarp, tie downs, etc. Used every bit of it one time or another.

Only worry, and at 63 that's a remote one, is if some cop decides to call what I consider essentials, "a rape kit". Sounds bizarre, but men have landed in jail and had a tough time getting out on nothing more than a vague resemblance and possession of such items.
