Practicality of neck knives ??

Hello all- I've been eyeing some nice neck knives, but a couple of thoughts about practicality. Do you use a neck knife as a back up or is it your primary carry ? If you carry it outside your shirt I think it may bring unwanted attention and what's to stop someone from grabbing it before you can stop them ? If it's under you shirt then you can never wear a shirt that's tucked in and in a hairy situation you could reach under your shirt, pull it out and slice you stomach open. I don't own any neck knives, but it seems to me that it would be most useful as a back up to whatever your main carry is. Who out there uses a neck knife as there only carry knife ? How do you get around the things I mentioned.
Thanks to everyone, Donald.

I love neck knives, but I never carry one around my neck. I think they make a super fixed blade replacement for the ordinary pocket knife. I just take the chain off and stick it in my pocket, or use the chain as a static cord and tuck the sheath under my belt.

In any serious situation where you might really need one, they are best as a back up knife. Otherwise, I wear mine in situations when I can't conveniently clip a folder to a pocket or waistband or carry a fixed blade for lack of anything to support it. Primarily these situations occur when I'm in my pajamas.

I own total of one neck knife and I don't desire more. I wear it bicycling when I don't have pockets, sometimes when fishing or hiking or mushrooming, etc. My biggest gripe? It takes TWO hands to sheath it. If it's big enough to be tactical, then I don't think I want it around my neck. I agree with Steve- sometimes I just stick it in my back pocket.

I also wear a neck knife as a discrete back up sometimes, although I also wear a Wicked Knife Co. LP on the outside of my shirt when doing chores as they are just real convenient.
I've been married long enough now that when I wear a Woo under my pajamas, my wife just looks at me funny but doesn't say anything anymore.

I own three CRKT "neck" knives; a peck, a MDP Stiff Kiss, and a Bear Claw. The Kiss is worn on the belt more than the neck. The Peck and Bear Claw ride in the pocket (upside down using the clip) most of the time. I feel that unless you are hiking or doing someother outdoor activity they are strictly for backup. Especially the bear claw. If you have to deploy that bad boy in a hurry plan on scratching (cutting) yourself or your favorite shirt. I have'nt ruined anything yet but I know it's a possibility under stress or attack. These knives work best covertly with snap button western style shirts or under zippered jackets.

Still, one hell of a useful idea, everbody shoud own at least one.

Thanks for the replies, very interesting how and why people use them differently.
P.S. JW what is "mushrooming" ?

My main carry, only carry, is one of my neck knives, the Lil blue forged from 52100. I used to carry a pocket knife but i sold it last year and haven't made any more. The only time I don't wear it around my neck is when wearing a tie, then it goes on the inside pocket of my jacket. If you let the tip of the knife sheath hang just below the neck line of your shirt, it is real easy to grasp it with your thumb and finger, pull it out, slide your hand down the sheath and draw the blade. My sheath has a longer back piece to put the tip of the blade on when reinserting into the sheath with one hand. No problems, but I am used to doing it so I guess what ever you get used to works best. OAL of blade is 6" with about 2.5" of cutting edge.
Another advantage I have found out since I put on about 40 pounds, you don't have to lean over to put your hand in your pockets to get at your knives. The clip works good but everyone can see it. Hope this has helped some.

YO-YO whazup?

OK, I use my neck knife a little differently. It hangs around my rear view mirror all the time, never moves. That way I am never in my car without a knife. And thats how I like it. You brought up some very good points though. Later, Jeff

Second thought. I'll probably never own another one simply because I don't want or use it enough. One is all I'll ever need. Personally I have no real need for one as some people above do. Jeff

I've always wondered about the comfort of wearing such an item. A knife in a sheath seems like a heavy item to have around your neck day in and day out. Doesn't the chain chaff on your neck?

Neck knives are excellent for harvesting food...

A lightweight Wharncliffe neck knife is my favorite knife for collecting mushrooms...

When I bend over the knife swings into my waiting hand....The blade design allows for reaching around and getting behind for the draw cut...

I hear the bolitus calling to me

Donald-nowhere fast, mushrooming is like hiking in the woods but you are bent over most of the time looking for edible mushrooms. The neck knife hangs handy for that.

I own quite a handfull of handmade neck knives, and use them as my primary carry blades as opposed to back-ups.

Reason: 1) I don't put myself in high risk situations, i.e., Homebody!
2) I'm big enough that most guys probably don't want to mess with me anyway.

I hardly ever wear these blades around my neck, as I just find them too annoying, and dislike the attention this type of carry attracts. I don't really like the looks of beaded chains, and anything else has the potential of becoming a garrote. I usually order them for belt carry, or I carry them in a pocket.

I'm going to be receiving my first 'neck knife' that a friend is making for me. He insists that I use it, and I intend to, but I can't think of one reason why I would ever want to wear it around my neck. I like the idea of a small fixed blade for in pocket or IWB carry, but not around my neck.

I generally wear a neck knife at all times. At home, or while working, it usually stays on the outside. If I go anywhere (store, eat, etc...) then I just slip it down my shirt. Wieght is no problem, the one I usually carry is a Raker Lil blue....dunno what it wieghs, but its not alot. As for ball chain vs. cord...cord wins. Chain catches the little hairs on my neck (ouch), para-cord is to thick, so I use a braided cord, maybe 1/8" thick that my wife picked up for me. It was about 2 dollars for 1000', so when it gets dirty, just cut off and replace. As for it being used to choke me, that to me, is one of those imagined fears. The possibility maybe there, but is so remote that I wont worry about it. People wear ties everyday, and that is a much greater risk. When in public, the necker is usually hidden, any possible bad guy should not even know about it until the knife is already out. A neck knife is like anything else, become familiar with it, learn its advantages and limitations, and you will have yourself a nice, practical using knife.

Donald,
I have found that among us knife nuts, the term "neck knife" often describes the size of the knife and not just the mode of carry. A knife in that size range draws almost NO attention when worn in a compact belt sheath.
I often carry mine in my pocket or IWB with the cord wrapped around my belt. I find this a great way to carry when I HAVE to tuck my T shirt in!!!

Practicality of a neck-knife? I wear a Fred Perrin le Griffe with a concealex sheath on a beaded cord. It's perfect for the evening run. Tucked into spandex it doesn't move around, is right where I can get to it should I ever need it and is more practical than pocketing a Military and trying to run with one hand holding up the jogging shorts.

Tucked inside a shirt it's also great in an office, at church or social functions where the Military is sometimes a little too notable.

I also carry A custom "neck knife" as my primary knife. I had Mike Sastre of River City Sheaths make me A super nice horizontal belt sheath. Black concealex, black belt, 2.0" wide, 6.0" overall. No one has ever noticed. It is very similiar in style to the CRKT neck peck. I have carried this for A while now and I don't even own A "tactical folder" anymore.
