Practicality of neck knives ??

I used to carry a neck knife of some sort EVERY day. However, I recently found out that I may have been violating some local laws...not something I want to do.

However, I have over a dozen quality neck knives, and for a few months there, I was NEVER without one. I wore one hiking, camping, fishing, to work, to play, all the time. My Fav, if you can believe it, was the Para Edge from CS. Real small and awkward, but I used and abused this piece for months. Right now, I have a Livesay Bow Hunting Buddy that I think is terrific, and I have a Nimravus Cub that I rigged a light weight sheath for around the neck carry.

Hell, I have even fallen asleep while wearing a neck knife once or twice! While camping, you never know when you may have to flee from the tent in a hurry...You may be in boxers, a t-shirt, and socks...but at least you'll have a knife!

i carry a crkt bear claw in my front pocket all te time. it has replaced my folder pkt knife a gerber jr ez out, which i gave to my knifeless brother in law. due to my size (6 4) and daily wear (chinos or jeans fyi in the jeans it rides in the watch pocket) it is vertually invisible. it is also very easy to draw simply place hand in pocket pop t sheath with thumb (fore finger on te retenton hole "so handy"!!!) and out come a small sharp blade nobody is even looking for. all in all on of te most perfect little blades i have ever carried. btw its most common uses are as a paring knife and a carving knife (i carve wood), but i do keep it hair poppong sharp with a fiskars key chain sharpener.

Ahhh, Running Dog: Spoken like a true Washingtonian. I thought I was the only genius on Earth who actually bent over a chantrelle patch to have a neck knife swing readily to hand. Now I'm just a commoner again.

I carry an Allen Blade Chipmunk, and rarely ever do I know it is there. I usually carry it when I am mushrooming, hiking, mountain biking..... other activities where I am wearing sweats or shorts or similar attire. And if I put on a belt for some reason, Allen made the sheath so that it converts to belt carry. Very slick.

As to gutting yourself while drawing a neck knife, I will paraphrase Chai Guy:
"If you can strike a match and light a candle without burning your fingers, you can safely operate any knife."

Sometimes I catch myself assuming that everybody knows their way around a pocket knife. Then I remember what the first three letters of "assume" are.

Personally, I love neck knives and I use them all the time. I carry mine around my neck. It sure beats reaching into my pocket for a knife. I carry mine outside, and yes, I do have to put up with funny looks and stupid questions. But, I dont care. I like the convenience of having a knife right there easily accessable anytime. One good point was brought up. Size of the neck knife is critical for comfortable carry. I had one of RJ Martin's awesome Kozukas, but just try concealing that sucker under your shirt! It looked like I had some kind of stomach tumor. I went with the mini kozuka and dont have that problem anymore. A good, practical neck knife should be light, thin and not too long. Otherwise, you might as well put a bowie on your belt.

I have two kinds (sizes) of neck knives.

I use the bigger ones (Boker Specialist, Boyer Mini Tanto) like this every time I wear suit
or vest.

Than I have smaller NKs (Bradburn, Running Dog etc.) and I use them when working on our small farm. Especially when making hay your pockets collect dirt and folders get soon very dirty. IMO it is better to use neck knife in this case (just watch your machinery!!). It does not even have to be on your neck....

And as someone said before they are great when picking mushrooms

I carry my neck knife with a tank top underneath a t-shirt tucked in. This is ussualy more comfotable for me and makes me feel safer but not much being that some of my knives are scary sharp.
