Hi Folks I have been working very hard to improve my skill set as there are skil's l needed to make a dagger that I did not have in my set., But with the help of some friends and my buddy Mike Q I am feeling better about the task at hand. The Practice Dagger is almost finished and ya the blade is a bit wide and at 10-1/2" long about 3"shorter then I would like. these are my first clam shells I really enjoyed making them. I got a little better handle on my coining so all and all feeling good going forward on the next one comments welcome. Happy Thanksgiving

Cool by me, Dave!

Nice damascus and the handle details look great, especially the fluting and twisted wire inlay.

The reason the blade width and length might bother you is because of the width of the quillions.....if they were narrower from "clam" to "clam"(or scallop to scallop), lol, it would make the overall appearance sleeker and more proportional.

Wide guards always make the blade look shorter and stubbier unless the blade is VERY long.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Dave, Excited to see this coming about. Who better to coach than Mike :thumbup:

Thanks for taking us along with this

So nice. Really like the proportion of the guard thickness to the handle. Lots of great details. I don't mind a wider blade but definitely longer on the next one. I have to start working on my skill set too. I'd love to make a dagger.

I see Mastersmith status in your future...

Beauty dagger. I like the wide blade, but agree the quillion is a touch wide........but otherwise it looks perfect. I also think daggers are better hollowground rather than flat, but that's really nit picking as they can be awesome either way.
/\I think Lorien hit the nail on the head.

I like the wide look. I will agree that the guard is wide, which contributes to the shorter feel, but I am digging it. I often feel, for my tastes, that many daggers are too narrow for my eye.
I'd love to have a dagger like this in my belt!

Nice work Dave... If this is just a practice piece, I'm really looking forward to the MS test piece.

Dave

I think this one isn't bad...for a practice piece....and I'd be happy to take it off your hands, even with the too-wide guard:p

All kidding aside, I agree with STeven that the guard does make the blade look "stubbier" - even though it is not.

I love the handle treatment and, as always, your steel is awesome!

Personally, I tend to like a very symmetrical Damascus pattern on a dagger because I think it works well off the center ridge - but that may just be me.

I also very much look forward to "the real thing":thumbup:

Thank you all for your input and the one I am working on now is narrower and longer and I do think I will pull the guard down in width just a bit still learning about these daggers so all this helps

Well done, Dave! By George, I think you've got it. :)

You are one talented guy. The next one will be outstanding.

I love your steel and always have, Dave.

Good looking dagger, I agree with everyone..
Of course, I would like to see a little longer blade.

Thanks for sharing !

Beautiful Dave, but still very business-like. You need to make some armor to go with it! ;)

And good on ya Mike, for helping out.

i like it!! Beautiful piece, congratulation
As far as the proportion the matter is subjective if it is not a MS test dagger :)

Excellent work. That Damascus really caught my eye. Can't wait to see some really good photos of it.
