Praise for Bark River

Shorter than the Aurora for sure. From the specs just under 4" for the handle.

It's not even the length as much as the height of the handle and the relative thickness. Still a cool blade though. I'm crossing my fingers that they'll eventually do a puukko style blade again (for production).

I spoke with BRKT the other day and I believe they are sending me one for T&E. I'll let you guys know how it performs.

Yep, gotta agree. Bark River is one of my favorite brands. I now have:

Golok
Canadian Camp
Bravo 1
Gameskeeper
Fox River
North Star
Mini North Star

I can see many more I want!!! They are pretty unique for a production knife company.

Man, if I had some spare cash around right now I would buy one for my girlfriend! It's a bit small for my big mitts but I bet it would be perfect for smaller hands.

Whoa. Mike did it right on that one!! I hope to see it turn into a production in the future.

What is hobsons choice? :o

Knowing Mike, he will likely do it if enough interest is generated. He is very accommodating to the wishes of "the masses."

I would like to see that too, but in at least 3/16".
The curve in the spine and the tapered handle of the Northstar did not agree with me and the Aurora seems so big. This is a very interesting variant and pretty inexpensive to boot.

Stay away from BRK&T! They will spoil you. You'll expect every knife you buy to be custom quality plus at production prices. You'll buy knives you don't need... just because they are functional... or pretty! And, you'll start expecting other companies to supply their wares sharp... what a requirement. Seriously, what fantastic offerings they have. That knife doesn't interest me in the least... not a bit... no use whatsoever for such a thin blade. Not me.

What was it called and who still has some???

Stainz

Based on the fact that these knives where made from an old stock of existing blades (much like the Mini Special Hunting Knife), that Mike re-heat treated and re-ground, there will be no more like these.

But Mike has said that this project will be used to gauge the interest in a small bushcraft knife.

Based on the response I have seen here and over at the Bark River forum, I suspect that he will be working on a new design to fill the void.

Of course Mike has many new models planned that have not yet been produced (the demand for those damn Bravo-1’s keep pushing other projects farther down the production schedule).

My advice to anyone looking for an ultra light bushcrafter is to grab one of these right away.

There low price and limited number makes the ULB a very attractive purchase.

Very cool looing little knife. I'm a fan of barkies.

Hobsons choice...from Mike...

HERE IS THE INTERESTING PART

I Spark Tested the Blades.

They sparked Fine but had short Spark Tails.

Hmmm........Not Hard Enough

Remember--At this point We were Still Assuming they were 1095.

Abby Boxed them up and we Shipped them to Our Trusted Heat Treater.

I asked them to call when they arrived.

Two Days later I got the Call and told them to Heat Treat one of them as if it was 1095.

The next day--they called and Said.........40 Rockwell

I asked them to Rockwell Test one that they did not touch.

I waited on the phone and he came back with.......40 rockwell

That told me a lot.

First---Somebody else also thought that they were 1095. hence--The Blades looked Heat Treated.

Second--They needed to go Hotter in the Initial Hardening Stage. They were not 1095.

Third--The Blades were alloyed and were not a Simple Steel --like 1095.

The logical next Step was to Develop a Profile closer to an alloy Steel.

I gave them New Temperatures for Heat--Quench and Temper.

They said that they would proceed with 5 and then call me Back.

I got the Call the Next Morning and the word was--57-58 rockwell

I told him to run all of the Blades using that profile.

He said that he had to put something on the paperwork.

He asked What this profile was called and what was the Steel?

I told Him--"Hobson's Choice"

:)
