I read that and all I can think of is the beginning to that "Money fer Nuthin, chicks fer free" song from the 80's with Sting singing "I want my Mtv"

You are well on yer way to being the Warrior-poet!

Keith

P.S.
Who do you study Budo under? Which Budo? Aikibudo kobudo?

I study ninjitsu under Hatsumi Soke of the Bujinkan.
I just passed my godan test, but it is a mystery how.
I feel like a moron in class, this art is always above my head.
That's how I know it's for me!

Congratulations!

I've always felt that 6th degree black and first degree brown were the most important ranks in Japanese and Okinawan ranks. At 6th black, one is a monster ("Rodan"). At 1st brown, one is appreciative ("Sankyu!").

Not to brag, but I fall in with Chopsticks and Seebee17. 5'7" and about 145 lbs. That's actually up from 130 lbs. when I joined the Army 2.5 yrs ago. Since we only got 5 minutes to eat each meal, I got into 'survival' eating. I would stuff everything within reach into my mouth and down my throat, then pay for it with serious gastrointestinal upset later. :grumpy: One day the chow hall served chili dogs and baked beans... it wasn't pretty. Anyway, what happened is that once we were given more time to eat, I was still in survival mode and stuffed myself to the gills. Then when I got to AIT and had a grocery store across the street, I ballooned to 160 lbs. in about two months. I went home on leave and got quite a ribbing from my family for my (relatively) fat cheeks. So I stopped drinking a 12 pack of Sprite all by myself every weekend and brought it down to my current weight, which is pretty good. My Dad has the same good luck, 48 yrs. old, 5' 9" and 175 lbs or so. He doesn't work out much or watch his diet either, so I think I'm safe as long as they don't ship me to Basic again.

Can you recomend a good website RE ninjitsu / ninja
that presents a good overview / history,
so I can begin to sort out fiction from fact
when I come upon it elsewhere.

I wish I could, but the truth is that there really is no website like that, not yet.
Let me recommend www.kutaki.org. It is the bujinkan website forum. There you can ask questions and some pretty smart, well-educated students will give you their best educated guesses.
that is the very best I could recommend.
If you want the 100%, you gotta find a real bujinkan teacher or come here to japan and ask Soke yourself.
I hope you do!

I know when one says the N-word (ninja), all sorts of craziness happens, but if you persevere and keep your self centered and use your common sense, you will easily discern the gold from the lead.

I would be happy to answer any questions you have, or if that's not good enough, I can ask Hatsumi sensei and then email you his answer to your question.

I trust you guys to be serious, so now worries.

Thanks,
don't have any special questions,
just know that a lot of "ninja" info is pure fiction
and I like to have firm ground to work from.
There's a lot of nonsense perpetuated about taijiquan also,
from 'teachers' as well as others.
Reminds me of Yvsa's comments RE 'shaman'.

Is the Ninjutsu you are studying the basis for To-Shin Do, self defense classes here in the states?

I started To-shin do hoping the workout would help with the weight...I've gained ten pounds, but wouldn't want to be on the other side of one of my kicks:D Muscle weighs more than blubber:rolleyes:

Toshindo is an art created by one of Hatsumi Sensei's first American students, Stephen K Hayes.
It began as part of the Bujinkan, but it is now something separate.
How and why I don't know.
I know Steve, I met him at the Tennesee Taikai about 6 years ago.
He is a nice man and very skilled.

Incidentally, to-shin-do is an alternate reading for the kanji that mean ninjitsu.
clever, huh ?

Danny,

I was going to ask if you were a Bujinkanner. (Assumed yes, because of locale, kunai, etc...) Guess I could have just looked at your website. Doh!

Congrats on 5th Dan. Did Hatsumi-soke use shinai or bokken? :D

I read the Black Belt article a few years ago wherein Steve said he wanted to improve Ninpo (by creating ToShinDo). Sad. Rumiko was scarey good- may still be...

Ninpo Ikkan,

John

See ?
Ninjas hiding all over the place.

I took my HI kothimoda to the hombu dojo and all the big ninjas there oohed and aaahed over it, so there you have it!
Ninjas love HI kukhuris !
Soke used his "Golden Shinai."

Well, I'm most likely to use Hojutsu at all but the closest ranges!

Have given many HI kuks- mostly sirupatis, but I prefer WWII myself- to buyu and instructors.
