Prayer Request!!

My 20 year old brother is facing a criminal sentencing on June 23rd from 1:30 to 4:00 pm CST.

I would appriciate anyone and everyone saying a small prayer for him and that "God's will be done..." at that time.

He is facing possible jail time and the judge's decision affects his ability to own firearms (he is an avid outdoor's man!), vote, or serve in the military (He is looking into the Marines :D ).

He DEFENDED himself in a fight over a year ago and, although he did not start the fight, he quickly ended it by punching the other guy in the jaw and unintentionally breaking it...
The other guy pressed charges...

This last year has been extremely hard for my parent's (with one son in a court case and the other on the front lines in Iraq!) and a prayer for them would be appriciated too...

God bless...
As my wife says: "this, too, shall pass..."

My prayers will be with your brother. We use to refer to this as the after fight race, meaning that the first one to the jail to take out a warrant win's the race. The best thing you can hope for is that the other guy has a criminal background and that can put a shadow on his credibility. Also "when" your brother is aquited get him to file charges against the other guy for assault and false inprisonment / arrest.

You got my prayers Sgt. It is a damned shame when you can't even defend yourself for fear of getting hung out to dry.

God be with your brother and your family, Jess. I always find it dificult when faced with information about these incidents not to launch into a rant about one's basic, God given right to self defense. Take solace, regardless of the outcome in court, in the knowledge that defending oneself is righteous and justified. Sometimes a moral victory is overshadowed by a legal defeat but that doesn't change the justifiability of an action such as defending oneself from harm.

You have my prayers.

I brought this subject up over at swordforum.com and it is funny the types of reactions people in our "community" give when hearing about this...
Like I have always believed, the ones who prize their rights are the ones who stand up for them...

There is no other man I would have by my side than my brother and he has made me proud standing up for what he knows is right. We all know this is just another "bump" in the road of life to and that God will take care of us all...

thanks you all for your prayers and thoughts! I will pass them on to my brother and parents...

Jess

Prayers sent! I'm not even gonna get started on the right for self-defense... I woulda asked the cops where they were when this started, since they're supposed to 'keep the peace'...

Jess,

God bless you and your family, especially your brother at this time; I hope and pray this goes as well as possible for him! Thank you for your service!

Gene

Jess, hope the judge make the right decision.

I'm gonna sticky this one for a while.

Good luck man.

Prayers sent! Hope all works out for your brother. It is indeed sad that self defence is no longer allowed.....

You know... the real irony here is that the very legal system that allows for this sort of nonsense was established as a result of a people using self defense in an attempt to preserve freedoms such as a right to self defense... :grumpy:

All the very best wishes for your Brother, your Family, and You. Stand fast and He will be by your side and at your back.

In the words of a wise and trusted friend, "That would be incorrect". No offense or slight intended Mark. He's a very direct sort of guy.

The real job that law enforcement officers find themselves engaged in is that of picking up the pieces after the deed is done. I've been advised by several LEOs to keep self preservation skills sharp, and be circumspect in their use should the need arise for this very reason.

I'm sure Sgt Horse's bro is now painfully aware of this now. Be assured that mine is not the only location in the Great Northwet from which prayers are being sent on the behalf of "our brother".

Edited to add: An apology to Jess for the "almost hijacking" of his thread. I intended this to inspire support and am sorry if any one sees a different interpretation.

Again Mark, no offense!
This is as close to a rant as I'm gonna get, and commend my fellow forumites on their restraint.

Peace be the journey.

No offence taken, Oku. Perhaps you misunderstood what I was saying (I shouldn't type and drink at the same time, I guess...)? In my opinion, as well as some of my friends who are law enforcement officers, things like this should have never gone to trial... If Jess's brother didn't start the fight, and was acting to defend himself, then the idiot he hit should have been told that it was a learning experience.
Unfortunately, the DA/ assistant DA (who decides whether a case should go to trial or not) is a politician, and in many states (like California) usually more concerned with how he/she can make things look to the public vs. what is truly just. Thus, the right to self defense is verbotin in some states/counties (If he throws a punch at you, run away... ). Many politicians like to use law enforcement as a moral crutch for this position: thus my 'keep the peace' comment.
It wasn't an attack against the police (although looking back it can be read as such...), but rather against the system that pushes them as an answer to crime instead of self-defence, when, as you stated, they're there to pick up the pieces afterwords... To any law-enforcement officers who may have been offended, I apologize... Guess I'll have to lay off the beer... Hmmmm. Nah! No beer would make life too miserable... :D

Politics and Justice, like MSG and good food shouldn't yet always seem to go together.

I emailed a link to my parents and brother and my mom printed them off and read them to my brother last night. He cried...

There are few things that drive me to tears and your thoughts, prayers, and concern for someone who has never posted here but is a family member is truly touching...

My family and I both thank you...
God bless you all...

Sgt. Horse

On a side note:
Yes, IMO, the other kid should have "learned a lesson" from this, but from the sounds of it, he has not. I personally blame parenting, but I am not a parent and can not compare (except with my parents, who have gone out of their way to ensure my brother and I both understand what 'responsiblity for actions' is...)

thanks again...

Xel,

We're on the same page. I'm gonna stop there due to danger of a soapbox injury.

Jess,

I think that most of us on the Busse forum share some core values. Among these is the importance of family and the right to self defense. The difficuly your brother is having is both apalling (sic) and a symptom of society's current current belief that "it's not my fault".

Prayers are with you and yours. Remember that God never gives us tests we cannot pass. (I know that can sound trite and hollow, particularly in your brother's situation, but it is still true.)

Peace be with you

How is it that the law breaker, the guy who attacked your brother, can now pursue legal action? It seems like a load of crap to me. IMHO, the guy was looking for an ass whipping, he was just looking to give, but not receive. Serves him right. Good luck to your brother, I hope justice is served and he is freed from any charges. Stay strong, and you will be in our thoughts and prayers too.

Yeah, it seems a widespread defect in todays jurisdiction that a criminal has a chance of turning the tides to his favor by pursueing legal action against the victim. I wish your brother luck. May he leave the court as a free man.

Regards

Mark23
