I teach in a community college that has a branch right next door to Pearl High School and I live about ten miles from Pearl myself. As a teacher, a member of a community that experienced one of these shootings, and as a parent I can tell you that my heart absolutely breaks when I see someone else having to go through it. Notes on spiritual life follow; stop reading if this seems inappropriate to you on this thread...

I heard an interesting sermon the Sunday after the Pearl shooting here - the preacher was quoting a British priest who gave a sermon during the Blitz (Air raids on London, WW2). His name was Whitehead, I think. Anyway the take he had on the "will of God" in circumstances where it is difficult(!) to perceive was this: There is the "intentional" will of God, the "circumstantial" will, and the "ultimate" will. In these shootings, for instance, the intentional will of God would be that there is an ordinary school day, no shooting. The circumstance of free will and evil, however, can thwart God's "intentional" will but also call out a "Christ witness" who can be God's agent in the circumstance. The ultimate will is seen as the promise of the new heaven and new earth, somthing not influenced by our free will and not thwart-able. He went on to say that the important thing, then, in situations where God's intentional will has been interfered with, is to open yourself to be that Christ witness. Our preacher went on to say that this didn't necessarily mean giving first aid on the scene (although it certainly could) but to work and witness in the community afterward, to avoid rage at man or God, to move forward in surety of the ultimate will. So Joe, if you have a chance to talk to someone about "why would God let this happen" maybe you can share this perspective on the levels of God's will.
Best,
Billy
