My prayers are with the Buck families who may have kids who witnessed or were injured in the shooting yesterday...

Was thinking the same thing. I hope no one at Buck was affected and am sorry that anyone had to experience this terrible thing. I have kids in school and know how I would feel. God bless you all.

You guys are terrific! I will pass your sentiments on to those who were directly effected. I guess we are were in some way or other.

Thanks,

I teach in a community college that has a branch right next door to Pearl High School and I live about ten miles from Pearl myself. As a teacher, a member of a community that experienced one of these shootings, and as a parent I can tell you that my heart absolutely breaks when I see someone else having to go through it. Notes on spiritual life follow; stop reading if this seems inappropriate to you on this thread...

I heard an interesting sermon the Sunday after the Pearl shooting here - the preacher was quoting a British priest who gave a sermon during the Blitz (Air raids on London, WW2). His name was Whitehead, I think. Anyway the take he had on the "will of God" in circumstances where it is difficult(!) to perceive was this: There is the "intentional" will of God, the "circumstantial" will, and the "ultimate" will. In these shootings, for instance, the intentional will of God would be that there is an ordinary school day, no shooting. The circumstance of free will and evil, however, can thwart God's "intentional" will but also call out a "Christ witness" who can be God's agent in the circumstance. The ultimate will is seen as the promise of the new heaven and new earth, somthing not influenced by our free will and not thwart-able. He went on to say that the important thing, then, in situations where God's intentional will has been interfered with, is to open yourself to be that Christ witness. Our preacher went on to say that this didn't necessarily mean giving first aid on the scene (although it certainly could) but to work and witness in the community afterward, to avoid rage at man or God, to move forward in surety of the ultimate will. So Joe, if you have a chance to talk to someone about "why would God let this happen" maybe you can share this perspective on the levels of God's will.

Best,
Billy

Billy,
THat was really good! That is kinda how i always believed it worked. Free will plus evil will produce some pretty horrible things. I know God could watch over the world with a huge magic wand and use it whenever bad was about to go down but we are more than robots right?
Take care,

Thanks so much for the sentiments expressed here. There were no "Buck" families directly impacted although a few had kids that were close enough to the action, and the sight of blood, that they were very fearful of going back to school.

The Granite Hills shootings were less impactful as no one died.

I am hopeful that this episode is over for east county.

I second Joe's reaction that in order for our devotion to God to be a sweet aroma, it has to be without hitches. Not just relying on him always making things right.

I am reminded of a story about King David. He lusted after another man's wife, a soldier in his own army, and had the man placed in the front lines to be killed so David could marry his wife. It would have seemed so simple for God to have protected that man but he was killed.

I do not know what triggers heavenly involvement and our challenge as Christians is to have faith to wait on God's ultimate goals as they do not involve this life but the next. That is tough when this life is all we've known.

Amen! We do not know all about God, for which I am thankful. If we humans could know and understand all about God we would be as smart as He is. If God is no more intelligent than us humans we are in big trouble. Romans 11:33 tells us that His ways, wisdom and judgments are unfathomable. His plan for His children is only for their good (Jeremiah 29:11).
