My 8 month old went into the hospital with a cold and ended up having heart surgery just over two weeks ago, so I sympathize with everyone.

As a health care professional, I have to say you and your friend are damn lucky to be alive. Pulmonary embolisms are ranked up there as one of those silent killers like heart attacks. I've seen people go down with pulmonary embolisms even while they are in the hospital (not while at home). Best of luck to your friend.
