Rob, I'm so sorry to hear this. My wife Harriet was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993, had chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, and has since had a local recurrence, radiation, and is currently fighting metastases and starting new chemo.
Please let your friend know that there is an incredibly supportive and informative online support community. The BC List, as it's known, has several hundred members and is an unparalleled source of both medical information and personal experiences from others who can answer questions that the doctors cannot. Easiest way to get to it is
through this web site, where she can also read archives and sign up for the list if she chooses.
As for you and your wife, know that your support and concern is extremely important to your friend and her family. In particular, realize that breast cancer isn't something that gets cured; she will have to live with its threat for the rest of her life, and it remains a scary beast. Most of all, pray for help and keep asking questions.
Finally, if your friend would like to communicate directly with my wife for any information or whatever, let me know via email and I'll send you her email address and phone number.
