Pre 1955 Opinel

Found this picture....I'm assuming that this is the lock shut cut out on the locking ring....

I was asking about "lawyer".

So today I got a little excited when I saw another Opinel rusted up without a lock ring (Virobloc) at a flea market .,,,,
A bit of a clean.

It’s actually a 1986-90 number 8 missing it’s lock ring, the blade is carbon and the ferrule was nickel plated.

I don’t imagine I’ll find a carbon lock ring or another Opinel that is all useless other than it’s lockring as a donor.......

Opinel sent me a new lock ring!! No charge!!

It was/is stainless. I don't know if they have Carbone!!!

It looks like that knife may have sterted its life without a lock ring. If it were mine, I would keep it as a pure friction folder. Of course, YMMV.

Only you lot on here would appreciate why I like these 2 old ones sent to me today a 7 and a 8, in fact I am over the moon.

Most citizens would value new, shiny and in good condition, not me 😇

I sent back the Openil I bought recently as it was mistakenly described by the buisness seller (not deliberate).

I was polite and accepeted his offer of a refund and was happy with that.

He then said would you like two old ones to make up for the mistake as I probaly cant sell them in this condition (he knew I liked old).

Moral of the story be polite when things go wrong 😁

They arrived today we think they are very old as OPENIL is written smaller than the wrist if you look on the chart.

I am not exactly sure what period, what do you think?

He has a lot of them for sale on Etsy he must have a contact in France

You can also do as I've read the French do and tap the collar on a cutting board or other hard surface to start the blade open.

Not the collar, the end of the handle. The "Coup du Savoyard".

I can't open many of mine with the nail nick either because it's hidden from a worn blade or it's too tight, & that's what I aim for so no accidental openings, I open them by tapping the end of the handle on something hard.
The one's with the blade close cutout are often left a little looser as this isn't an issue but sometimes those need a tap as well as the wood changes.

👍 Coup du Savoyard (Savoyard's trick)
