Pre-flight double check

So it's been about a year since my last flight and since then I have taken to edcing allot more stuff. I have checked the TSA website but I want to check in here too because: some items are not listed, and often times there are differences between official policy and the interpretation of said policy. So here is what I plan on taking and how it's being packed. Let me know if I should change anything.
My BCB credit card multi-tool, multi-pliers, and Byrd Robin will be checked.
The TSA states that a small lighter may be a carryon but I'm wondering if anyone has ever had issues with this. I'm also taking a maglight solitaire on my person.

The one item I really have no idea about is my ResQme. What does the TSA say about this, and if possible does anyone know what Atlanta Ga law might say about the device?

All of my checked stuff is legal but I'm still wondering if I should bury it in socks and underpants to avoid sticky fingers, or would that make the stuff look suspicious? Thanks for any info.

i've checked edged weapons and pepper spray into baggage on more than one occassion, without incident.

do not try to bury it to avoid theft, if there's any type of lanyard ring (or comparable) ZIPTIE it to the inside frame of the suitcase.

yea, TSA website says butane lighters are clear for carry on, but NOT for luggage. go figure?!?! can't help ya on the flashlight, i checked mine

I've flown quite often and always carried my surefire e2e onto the plane. It has always been in my camera bag or laptop case, never had a problem.

+1, I carry my Surefire on all the time as well. Some of the more.....irritating TSA people will ask why I need a flashlight. I always tell them the little reading light is too damn small for me to see. :D They usually accept that answer.

As for the ResQme, I think that might give you a little more trouble. If they don't look at it real close you might be ok. But if it gets a close examination I'd be willing to bet they'd give you some crap for trying to bring it on. Since it has a razor blade embedded in it they may consider it the same as a knife, and the glass breaker wouldn't gain you any points either. You can try it, but don't be surprised if one of the TSA agents takes it.

But hey, on the bright side you can take 5 inch scissors and screwdrivers on without an issue.

I flew around Christmas time, and I had multiple bic lighter in my carry on and on me (no problem), a surefire g2, mini-maglite, petzl headlamp, paracord wrapped widgy bar (got asked what it was once, I told them it was a bottle opener and they said OK). No problems or questions about any of this.

A widgy bar is actually a handy thing to have on a flight if you can't have a knife. My dad had not taken his headphones out of their blister pack, and we managed to get it open with the widgy bar.

I've also seen a pair of scissors that easily disassemble into, yeah you guess it, two knives. Wondered how these would go over. Can't remember who makes them though.

Put some of the smaller items into a well-worn pair of running shoes. Stuff a pair of gym socks into the top of the running shoes to keep the stuff in place. Unless the thief has a foot fetish of some sort, he or she will definitely stay away from a pair of grungy shoes. I use this method to carry my 4" folding knife in my checked luggage. I have never had a problem from TSA or a thief.

i always have a flashlight in my carry ons. never been asked about it.

i also check a firearm, so put my knife in the lockbox with the gun. im not too worried about thievery.

i would think it better to check anything that has any sort of blade on it rather than attempt to carry it on.

Your resQme won't be a problem. If for some reason the police in GA happen to challenge your knives and ask for the purpose of carrying them, by all means NEVER say it's for protection / self defense because you are incriminating yourself under GA law that prohibits carrying any knife for offensive/defensive purpose. Just say these are tools. They may or may not believe you, but at least you're not making it an open & shut case.

In my years living in Atlanta (carrying knives of one form or another) I've never been challenged by the police. You should expect the same, but I'm telling you the rules in case you have horrible luck.

You could just mail your non-firearm items to your hotel or hold for pickup at the service center where your going.

Ok...I just got back from Portland scot free and this is what I did.

First, on the lighters. You can carry a Bic on your person on the plane, not in cargo. this is because the hold is not pressurized. You cannot carry torch style lighters on your person, but can check empty ones in your luggage.

Second, with stuff in your bags. I made sure to etch my initials on everything and take digital photos before I left. I then secured/buried my knives and such in my checked luggage and left a note indicating that they had been inventoried for my safety.

Probably unecessary, but I don't trust the TSA.

?

Of course the hold is pressurized. There is a ton of property that would be destroyed if it wasn't... not to mention the pets?..

This is what they tell you if you ask...I forgot the  smiley...Basically, they do not want it to explode...

not all of the cargo space on all planes is pressurized, so unless the cargo is listed as requiring air (live animals) then it is assumed that it might be in an unpressurized compartment. and by unpressurized I mean, less pressure than the cabin, but still more than outside. I'm told that even a small pressure difference could be hard on some things.
Ever do the trick where you hold some butane in your hand and light it? imagine an entire lighter going off because the button got pushed........ boom?

ive checked in a 3 inch SOG x ray vision mini, the thing is i made a diversion safe out of a right guard deodorant container and put the knife in there so they wouldnt see or think nothing of it! :) i checked in my knife with luggage of course!

Had a very small crescent wrench and allen key set confiscated by TSA last year [tools I that were in my carried-on scuba regulator bag]. Those vicious allen keys. My SureFire U2 has never given me any problems. You could walk onto a plane with a squash racquet, but no allen keys. It's always good practice to mentally/physically go through your carry-on gear. I was waiting in a security line when it dawned on me that I had a delica in my carry-on ... had to mail it home ...

I frequently travel with lots of gear and I've never had any other problems, but did almost lose an MSR white gas stove in Costa Rica ... washed all the gas 'residue' away in the bathroom and they let me go.

The big problem with air travel is the TSA goons don't read or use their own rulebook. The individual agents are given free reign to interpret and pretty much make up their own rules in some airports. Any action besides total obedience will simply draw more agents upon you and possibly result in having the local LEOs arrest you for noncompliance. I haven't flown commercial air since the Sept 11 attack and until they get rid of these gestapo goons I never will.

if you haven't flown, since then, what are you basing this on?

i've made a couple international flights, since 911. they involved several layovers in both the US as well as foreign countries. i've NEVER had ANY problem with the TSA security folks. they've always been great. now, those jerkoffs Greyhound hires, that's another story.
