Pre heat treat

For 5160 steel i do a 400 grit finish before heat treat and for 154 cm i do 600 - 800 grit finish. 154 cm steel can be finished at a higher grit because it is heat treated in an air tight bag making decarb very very minimal. But 5160 is not, and is oil quenched making decarb a pain to take off. so you dont want to take to much time finishing a 5160 blade, because it will all be a waste after heat treat.

Use an anti-scale compound, available from Brownell, and you don't have to worry
about decarb. This will allow you to take a 5160 blade to a finer finish before
heat treat.

Can i dry fit my handle material and pin holes or do i have to worry about shrinkage or expansion. How about the edge thickness.

For 440-C take the edge to around .015 and handsand to a 600 grit finish, drill all holes before H/T.
