Pre-HT grind to Razor Sharp?

Hello I'm thinking about trying my hand at knife making and dont have many tools to work with other than an angle grinder, files, clamps and a drill. I've watched most of the tutorials, read quite a bit and every thing looks like smooth sailing up until after the heat treat. All of the tutorials just jump from pre-HT/pre-temper grind (still ~1mm thick to prevent warpage) to razor sharp. I'm going the no power tool route and I have a sharpmaker that I could make sandpaper rods for. I guess my question is how do you go from 1mm at the edge to sharp? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!,
Parker

In this respect the stickies are going to be your best friends. There is plenty of info and tutorials there.

Aside from that, you said you have files. Use one of your files, a bastard cut will remove metal the fastest, and file the edge just like you did before HT. Just make sure to keep the angle of your bevel the same. Then you can clean it up with sandpaper in increasing grits, and sharpen with whatever sharpenr you may have.

Another suggestion is filling out your profile. With your location and some info on you, like age, hobbies, and occupation, someone near you might offer some assistance.

Thanks to both of you! Pyro, I've looked through the stickies and they were pretty help full but im worried about keeping a consistent angle with the files...

Will do!

P.S. How do I use the multi Quote feature I see the button for it but then what?

Keeping a consitstent angle actually isn't that hard. Just make sure your bevels are flat the file will hlod itself against your knife.

Click the multiquote button on the posts you want to include (a checkmark will appear), THEN hit the "Reply with Quote" button on one of them, and all checked posts will be included.

Always tricky. If your bevels are good, you can just hold to those. Some people make jigs to help with the angles. Others just get there with practice.

It sounds hard, but hand filing/sanding is actually pretty simple to do. Use straight strokes in one direction, and NEVER stroke back and forth with the file or sanding block. When sanding, use a 2X2X6" hard wood or metal backing block (aluminum works well).

You can get flatter and straighter bevels by hand work than most can get with a grinder. Take your time, and the results will almost always be impressive....rush to get done fast, and the results will almost always be mediocre.
