Hello!

I am trying to find dealers/retailers who would have swords/knives/stillets decorated with semi/precious stones or metals. I am looking for things of eastern and european origin - this board seemed to be most closely related. Please let me know if you have suggestions for leads on this kind of information.

Regards,

Ilya

Ilya, there's a place in Sante Fe, NM that has some knives that are pretty highly decorated. It's called Santa Fe Stoneworks, I believe.

Yvsa might be able to help in this area. He knows a lot of Indians who work with turquoise and coral.

There are a few Indins doing that, but most are local peoples wherever they happen to be and don't advertise much.

I was thinking more along the lines of one of the little deerhorn silver mounted Dhankutas or a Kothimoda.
I know you have the little Dhankutas occasionally, but I don't recall any presentation knives other than the beautifully engraved ones you have.

It's a good thing I had Kothimoda spelled close enough for you to know what I meant.

Yvsa, I know you are capable of taking some silver, turquoise, coral, and perhaps a couple of other semi precious stones and turn a scabbard and/or knife handle into a work of art. A Cherokee Kothimoda! Why not?

Uncle Bill,
I've seen pictures and descriptions of kothimodas, but never a translation of the word itself. What does "kothimoda" mean?

I hadn't thought of it that way Uncle.

I suppose I could do some inlay work with stones. The silver is a little more difficult.I do have a couple of pieces and some wire laying around here though.

I also have some real pretty man made diamonds and a couple of saphires an such too.

I know this is a little off the forum topic, but Zaza Revishvili, a Russian maker makes some custom knives with silver and semi-precious stone decoration unlike anything I've ever seen. Here are some pictures from http://www.artknife.com

This was a collaboration with Gil Hibbin, and has an estimated value of $6,000. Sorry for the size of the post, Uncle, but I though the pictures are worth it.

ps if you want more, they also have a picture of one of his folders

I am not sure what a good translation of Kothimoda (sometimes Kotimora) would be. Sonam might be able to help and Kami will have an answer when he gets here.

Kami recently priced an old but very good Kothimoda in Kathmandu and is was $1200 US. This is the highest price I've ever seen or heard of for a Kothimoda. Kami said it had about 6 oz. of silver on the scabbard.
