Predator Control

Gedd, thanks, that's a good one to use. Some pictures we'd enjoy. I remember back in the 80's taking Spruce Grouse with a .22 pistol. They have dark meat and are large as a Bandtail pigeon. Thanks, DM

David, you must be pretty good with calling to get them into shotgun range.

Been excited to do some bird hunting myself. I mostly carry a Bucklite 501 I've had for about 15 years. It has blaze orange handles and I keep it in an ancient thick leather snap sheath I got from LL Bean many, many years ago. Was actually thinking that my 55 would be a good bird knife as well. I always have the 501 with me when duck hunting. The 55 seems more refined for grouse, or as they call them up in these parts "Pat - ridge".

Thank you harly. I've been a student of game calling since 1975. Sometimes it works, other times not. Not well known, the shotgun is a very effective, humane tool for predators. With the right load.
The 501 should work for grouse. While duck hunting have you ever taken any with those money bands on their legs? I took a banded mallard once. The numbers on the band allowed you to look it up and see where it was captured and banded. But no money was offer for claim. Shucks. Good hunting and posts some pictures for us. Thanks, DM

Dave,
I have never gotten a banded bird myself but my hunting buddy's son has probably gotten 10 or so over the years. He's 20 yrs old now, probably been duck hunting since he was 11. He keeps the bands on his call lanyard. We hunt Lake Champlain, right on the VT side of the Canadian border. Several years back I gave him some shooting tips, same ones his dad tried to tell him but couldn't get him to listen to. Stuff like leading the bird, swing, follow through etc. These days he outshoots me like there is no tomorrow.

Robert, I've found nickel plated F Buck to work the best in 3" shells. They are .22 diameter and the case holds 54 pellets a 1 7/8 oz. load. This is a reloading option only from Ballistic Products. However, #4 Buck in 3" shells works nearly as well. They hold 41 pellets of .24 diameter also a 1 7/8 oz. load and can be purchased at many sporting goods stores and online. They're easy on the wallet and very effective out to 50 yards. A fer piece for a shotgun. For fast moving targets in brush a scoped rifle is too slow. Good hunting. DM

Three inch #4 BK. My shoulder hurts thinking about it.:D

Thats what Dad used (RIP) on turkey. Was pretty funny the several times he would take down more than one bird at a time. He always said those shells were too expensive to waste on just one bird. Fun Times. Good Eating.

Good hunting Dave.

Pack, indeed! #4 Buck should not be used if you have loose fitting dentures. I don't doubt the load will take 2 turkeys with one shot. With me it doubles as my home defense load. I have good confidence in it. Kind of like my model 119. DM

Nice yotes DM, I'm gonna take your advice, heading out for my first chance to archery hunt in the am. Hopefully I can give my 113 some action

I kind of figured you were using small buckshot. Thanks for the answer,David.

A .223 does a nice job on coyotes. That shotgun up close will poke a lot of holes in the hide. No wonder your wife won't wear them. Holey Moley Batman!

While you have a point, A scoped rifle is still no match for multiple, fast moving targets. Here is a good model to use for skinning out fur bearers. Fur season not being in --- the clubs 110 paperstone, 112 paperstone and the Heritage 500 are all top skinners. That's a pellet hole I just revealed while skinning this out. DM
