Preemptive impulse buying—has that happened to you before?

And what knives did ya buy that way?

More of a joke and not intended to be a strictly serious thread lol. What I roughly mean by this: you 100% know that this next knoife is an impulse buy, you know that you’ll probably write it off after giving it more thought (or even just sleeping on it), so you buy it immediately before reasonable logic can prevail.

Essentially pushing the Id button before Ego and Superego can prepare their speeches lol.

I bought some of my favorite knives with this sort of lizard brain thinking: the Mora Kansbol and the ESEE Izula. I wasn’t totally crazy about these knives at the time of purchase but I enjoy carrying them way more these days. More recently, it happened with an obscure Casio watch with a Kanji day-date lol. Currently waiting for that bad boy to ship from Japan.

On a less joking note, I’d recommend listening to higher level reasoning 95% of the time. Life is more financially viable and responsible that way lol.

I did it with this year’s Bladeforums Traditional Knife. I never was able to participate, now that I can, logic wasn’t even a factor. It does help that I only carry slipjoint knives nowadays, but the pattern is not really something I would go out of my way to buy. It’s also fairly expensive.

I do think I will like it however, if only for the attachment to a community that I enjoy. There was really no higher level reasoning for me buying the knife, saw preorders were active, and clicked buy. 😂

I have found that there are knives that I look at and think "I really like that", it then when I start thinking and rationalizing then I will come to the logical decision that I dont need it or maybe something else would be better. However, every time I look at it I still think, "wow, I do really like that"
When I go ahead and pull the trigger often those end up being my favorites to carry and use.
I am a very analytical person and often overthink things. Some times I think it would be better to go with my gut and get what I like at first glance instead of talking myself out of it, or going with a more "logical" choice that doesn't really make me happy.

Older model Cold Steel SRK when they were marked Carbon V. Watched a guy slowly but surely baton that knife through an uprooted tree stump eventually cutting it in half. Had never seen such unnecessary nonsense and it made me had to have one. The newer SK5 steel models have a much thinner tip that I'm not sure would survive such treatment. I suppose they are more knife like and less sharpened pry bar.

I purchased a CS Full Metal Atlas lock knife the other day. I already have nice titanium handled knives and I already blew my toy budget. A great Labor Day sale combined with a weakness for titanium and I was done. Turns out to have been a really excellent purchase on a really good knife! Sometimes your gut makes the right choice.

I recently bought a Cold Steel Counter Point 6" knife knowing it's too big for me to carry at work. I find myself carrying it way more than I thought I would.
Say, that means you can look forward to some disciplinary action. With enough persistence, you might end up no longer subject to their demands.

I’ve found that after getting fired from a job, my compliance with their silly knife rules drops to zero (or lower).

I considered a crk when they were at the 400$ mark, now I’ve pushed them out completely.

Anyways, I always say that I’m done buying more as I have more than 10 families would need for 10 generations:p
I still bought a knife I probably won’t ever carry just a few weeks ago.

I would’ve bought from Horsewright but… I didn’t realize he had available knives…. Oh well :/

I like defensive knives. I have no use for them. But they make me feel bad ass.
Just like 99.99% of the Harley owners - throw a leg over and turn into an instant weekend bad-ass. How do I know this? I was a WBA, AKA: Poser, for 25 years until I got a bum shoulder and my hip wouldn't allow me to throw my leg over the seat anymore. I lost my WBA badge and am now just a GOF, AKA: Grumpy Old F*cker.

Do whatever makes you feel good!

I now hold at least 24 hrs before buying.......
Most of the time I decide not to but.
Saved a lot of money doing this and haven't bought a knife I later regretted buying
I do something similar. I have a list on my phone, when I see one I want to buy I’ll put it on the list…. And if it stays #1 on the list for a few weeks I’ll check it out.
It Definitely helps me cut back on the impulse purchases.
The last few knives I bought (over several months) have included an XM-18 non flipper, Microtech Stitch, AD20.5 slicer, and a Laid Back Jack. I really like all of them and have carried them all.

Yeah. I want a scram. Cheap, pretty, kind of versatile.
