Preferences on Blade & Handle Color?

I started acquiring some Busse knives a few months ago. Other than using the Busse for-sale forum, I usually hang out on WSS, so I am delighted to find a place to discuss Busse knives with other owners and enthusiasts.

My personal preferences on finishes tend towards low profile, especially on the larger knives. Since I live in a high desert area, low profile tends to mean sage blades and tan grips. Problem is I never know for sure whether a particular Busse will become a user until I handle it a bit. So I am concerned about resales opportunities on the blades I keep pristine. Hence my concern about color. I read a discussion earlier in which participants seemed to agree that the best colors for a user were sage blade on a black handle.

Does anyone have any suggestions concerning which colors sell best on the secondary market?

Black/black is always a winner, but folks have different strokes, so it's hard to say.

Some drool over tan/tan.

Lately, I've been digging black micarta and sage thanks to Amy-0.

I think you're probably right about black/black being the safest bet. To me though, it is the least desirable.....stands out like a sore thumb in the desert. I've got a couple BBs (Rat Mastiff & Ratweiler) because they were the only colors available on the knife exchange. I'm not sure any other colors were produced in those models.

I'm thinking sage blade/black handle might be a good compromise.

I prefer the sage with tan micarta... it blends beautifully and looks very natural. I was very tempted to go with sage/black, and it is my second choice, but I don't think that it coordinates quite as well as the sage/tan. The black/black is too tactical for my tastes.

If you are wanting broad appeal I would recommend staying with sage/tan, sage/black or black/black.

I don't think the colors matter that much for ease of resale. I suspect the rarer combos like black & tan g-10 and such would be slightly easier to sell.

Sage, black and Jungle Green are all great. The Urban Grey has to be the least popular and would probably be the hardest to resell. The new white may or may not turn out to be popular, though I'd lean towards the later.

Sounds like I couldn't go far wrong by just sticking to what I like most. So far I've got a ASH1 and a SJTAC ETS in sage/tan. I may get a Skinny ASH in the same pattern. I do keep my eyes open for special grips and finishes though, expecially double cut and competition, or tiger and snakeskin. Two of my favorites are a competition finish Hell Razor and a muddy/snakeskin GCFBM. The blade I'm most likely to take afield first is the ETS. Got to convex that edge a bit first.

Appreciate the comments.

Being a female knife collector, I appreciate something with a little color. Some pics for your viewing pleasure....

Now there's a collection! Yep, I'll eventually get into some more striking patterns. The problem for a newbie is there are few offerings from the companies, meaning a lot of start up purchases necessarily go to the secondary market. Hope I can sell what I decide not to hold. I do plan to hold everything for a least a couple years.

Thanks for the pics. :)

If it stands out, you're less likely to lose it!

I wouldn't like to drop that black-on-black in a cave though ;)

As long as the knife has micarta slabs you can get rid of the coatings and end up with a nice knife.

Yeah black/black might stand out in the desert. So What.:D

Well, when I carry one of the larger blades it tends to be in National Parks and Monuments where handguns are illegal. Otherwise, I'd have a CCW in my hip pocket. So, in my case, a large, capable knife is carried as a weapon as much as it is for bushcraft. Under such circumstances, I always prefer to be as discrete as possible. Just a personal preference. Walk softly and carry a gun or a big knife.....as discretely as possible. :D

+1:thumbup:

I'm not much for coatings, or anything other than micarta.

Of the coatings I like the Tan best, then the OD. The Black has to much crinkle for me, and I don't like Sage, Urban Grey, Brick or Artic white at all.
I think most agree the sage is the toughest coating.

Why do you say as long as it has micarta slabs - is there a problem if it's G10?

Can't speak for Tony, but for me it's the grip, warm feel and light weight of the Micarta that makes it my only choice. G-10 is tough and can look awesome, but it's not for me.

There have been a few threads on micarta vs. g10 and although there are some big g10 fans most of those that spoke up seem to have a pretty strong preference for micarta.

I'm firmly in the micarta camp... lighter, grippier, better feel, & warmer. What you get with g10 is striking visual appeal and less absorption.
