This is one I'm working on for a customer. The sheath isn't done yet... but O wanted to get your opinion on the "faux-aged" oak handle and wrap. I really like the look of old weathered wood and tried to recreate that with a few techniques. It is my "Bushmoro" model.

I like it. The lines flow together, and the the materials work well together. Very nice!

Rick, I think that looks fantastic!

A few questions, if I may inquire...

How thick is the steel, and what was your finish on the oak? Looks 100 years old, but still awesome! -Matt-

I think it is a really authentic looking knife. It reminds me of the stuff on display at the cowboy museums down here in Texas.

I really like the wrap - talk about authentic! I make some of my own woodturning tools, and I found a whole group of old timers that wrap any wood handled tool with wire for security and protective aspects to protect their tools.

Nice job. Like the long sweep of the blade too!

The steel approximately 5/32" thick(forged down from 1/4" barstock) and the handle finish is several coats of walnut tinted tung oil. The rawhide lace wrap was put on wet, allowed to dry, and coated with epoxy.

I wanted the "old look" but with the structural integrity of new wood. I have always loved trying to capture the look as if you found them tucked away in your grandfather's old chest.

Thanks guys....

I think you nailed it perfectly here! Thanks for the technical info and keep 'em coming! -Matt-

Absolutely beautiful.

Love that blade shape, almost spear point, more like a mini-barong.

That one is awesome Rick - I like the wood treatment, even more so than on your burlap/mircata version. I think you totally hit the mark right with this handle + knife design. I bet that cord wrap also serves as a nice thumb ramp.

Thanks also for providing the in hand and measurement shots. This looks like a really great belt knife!

Rick-

Oak is pretty open grained, I've often used a wood hardener soak on rough cut scales after 3 hours in a dehydrator. But I've also used linseed and tung oils and I think they end up working just about as well, though they may need an occasional reapplication. I think the finish effect you managed is really excellent- the aging is amazingly well done.

Q: how do you handle the pins like that? I've got a couple dozen 4 foot cuts of ~5/32 7 strand stainless cable and have been thinking about doing that. I have made a few mosaics with it.

Great advice on the wood hardener, bro..... I like that alot!

Nothing special about the pins, Christof... I peen them in and remove part of the dome when sanding. The tung oil fills in the low spots and it gets that star look to it. Not an intentional "look", on my part... that's just how it ends up.... lol. :D
