Since I've been so busy in the shop and haven't been posting here as much, I thought I'd do a higher end piece to make up for it. This was my only knife for this week. I had a lot of catching up to do on leatherwork, etc. after being gone unexpectedly for a whole week. It seems like I was working on this one forever since I was only able to move forward between pending work... so I'm very happy to be posting it finally.
A while back one of my wood sources (Burl Source) got in some very high grade Koa. I bought a few pieces of it for future use. I had planned on not using any for quite a bit longer, but temptation won, and I ended up being unable to resist using a block of the good stuff on this knife. The blade was originally going to be another "brindle hunter", but the Koa won the day- it is nothing short of stunning. It has very distinct and active curl figure, as well as deep and rich multicolored streaking with light, dark, and chocolate browns, mixed with other colors such as burnt orange and even some natural hints of green. This isn't your run-of-the-mill curly Koa.
The blade and swedge are carefully hollow ground for a mix of strength and cutting performance. The blade is well balanced and has excellent manners, in addition to its extremely versatile drop point shape.
I've been continuously refining my gunstock handle shape with each one of these I do, and I feel like I finally nailed it on this one. It will likely be my go-to or "house" shape now. Thanks in part to the beautiful Koa and a successful handle attempt, I think this knife is amongst my best work to date. It certainly is one of my personal favorites just for the Koa alone, but the whole knife came out beautifully. It was one where everything just "clicked". Incredibly striking in person. Blade finish is 800 grit as-ground satin polished, w/hand sanded flats.
Specs:
CTS-XHP @ 60RC, 4.5" edge length along center, .155" Thick
Hollow Ground Main Bevel and Hollow ground unsharpened swedge
Premium Grade Hawaiian Curly Koa, Stabilized by K&G
416SS Guard and Pin
10.125" OAL, 6.4oz.
Sharpened with slightly convex bevel and stropped to shaving sharp
$270, or $285 w/high quality hand stitched leather sheath, made to order (sheath pics on request) price includes shipping to USA.
Payment via Paypal on this one, first "I'll take it" plus payment gets it. Paypal email is ouspco at gmail dot com.
Sorry for the bad indoor pics. I added these because they give a sense of scale and show the crisp lines of the handle shape much better. These shots also show off the curl figure of the Koa better than the shots above, but the colors aren't quite there.
