Hi everyone, going to take the plunge and buy a premium knife. I've had my eye on the sebenza ever since becoming a knife nut. But before I go and pull the trigger I want to get some opinions and views. All feedback is great. Thank you all in advance.

There are many fine knives in that price range...but if you've had your eye on one for some time...I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I have a few Sebenzas, and that's way fewer than many, many others around here can boast.

Welcome to the forums.

you are goung to have to buy one .to get it out of your system. They are great knives.
I would suggest buying off the exchange-like new. If you decide it is not you, you should not loose much if any selling it.
There are a few configurations, so one may fit better than another for you.
2 basic users are the plain ti and micarta inlay

Any CRK, the Koenig Arius, the Spartan SHF, the Shirogorov Stellar, the Herman Sting, the Arnaud Bernard Imamba, the Hinderer XM18 3.5 harpoon spanto… just to name a few of the “premium knives” I really like :)

There is a lot of options but I you like the sebenza, go for it.
Personnaly I really prefer the large sebenza over the small
I have large PJ sebenzas with insingo blades, both the 21 and the 31

I have a small preference for the 21 but the 31 is now one of my basic users

IMHO take the one you like most visually and enjoy it

Don't forget the king of them all: Les George!

If you have your eye on a Sebenza, they're worth a shot. They keep pretty good resale values so if you don't like it you can sell it and try something else. Some other good options have been mentioned in this thread also.

Here's a Sebenza pic (small) because somebody has to post one.

Welcome Newfie. When I dialed in on purchasing a first Sebenza, I went through the following questions, and watched some youtube videos. It took handling a Mnandi at a dealer to learn (much to my surprise) that they were not for me.

1. Small or Large
2. Specific Model 21 was prevalent at the time
3. Blade Style - Drop, Insingo, Tanto
4. Steel options - if there are options and it matters to you
5. Handle Style - plain, inlays, graphics
6. Thumb Lugs (prefer double, but one is acceptable)
7. New from a dealer or look for a deal on the Exchange (*edit - mine was years before I joined BF, but still sourcing is a consideration)
8. Would I prefer an Umnumzaan instead (Inkosi or Mnandi)?

My answer was new small Sebenza 21 (then an Umnumzaan a few months later).

Feel free to offer corrections/improvements, I ain't the expert and won't be offended.

I think if i had not bought an Anso, i would have bought a Sebenza Small.
That knife get so high praises on here. And it really looks great.

Welcome!

This will be a lonely opinion, because they seem to be the most universally loved pieces around. Which I fully and completely respect.

Had the hots for one for some time now. Then a thread came up the other day and there seemed to be a solid consensus that the action was generally slow and deliberate, with that hydraulic feel.

Not so much my gig. Low drag and high speed.

Maybe after my tastes mature, it will be the one. :)

Do it.

Just ask your wife for a budget and how many are allowed first :)

Of the several premium knives I have, my CRKs cut best. Now, I prefer Zaan and Inkosi over Sebenza, but that might be just me. The Inkosi is basically an overbuilt Sebenza with double lugs from the get-go. Just saying :)

I finally got a CRK in 2019. I wanted a Sebenza 21, but it was right as they were moving away from titanium on steel lock up and were tooling up for the 31 to use the ceramic ball bearing like the Inkosi. With that in mind, the Inkosi actually fit my needs better, and I really, really love that knife.

Like others have mentioned, the Spartan SHF is great if you want the titanium on steel lock up of the 21 as well as a larger knife. To me, the SHF is like if they took a 21 and decided to retool it for battle. Larger and heavier at the expense of the tiniest bit of fit and a couple of nits to pick on finish, but ultimately a beautiful and very functional knife.

I find my CRK to be a bit more refined than my Spartan. I wouldn't part with either, but if I had to categorize each one, then the Inkosi more special to me as to why I bought it and a bit of a notch in the climb to a grail. The SHF is what I would take if you made me drop into parts unknown with nothing more than a folder. It narrowly beats out my Adamas, and that is saying a lot because I REALLY like the Adamas family.
