Premium Steel "Tenacious"?

Probably not. The Tenacious has G-10 handles, screw together construction, 4 way clip, and liners. Retails for around $32.

The Native is S30V, FRN handles, pinned construction, reversable tip up clip. It retails for about $55.

Personally, the Tenacious is excellent in it's 8Cr13MoV steel. It's not up to par with S30V/VG-10, but it keeps costs wayyyy down, and it's a snap to sharpen. Holds an edge long enough. Great knife to buy 2-3 of and give as gifts.

My only concern is that the pivot action seemed a bit loose to me. No play at all, but the blade moves fast. I tightened the pivot a 1/4 turn and it worked out fine. No slicing my finger tips off like some.

Any chance of an S90V Tenacious (and made on Earth and not in China)?
I think that would defeat the purpose of the Tenacious.
A great knife at a low price point,it would cease being tenacious and become the Rambunctious ;)

I like the design of the Tenacious, but I don't like:

1. the steel
2. products from china

I'd love to see it in S30V or VG-10. FRN handles would be just fine to keep the cost down (although I know the price would go up if production left china).

.....why take a successful entry level priced Spyderco and add on "upgrades" that will push the price point out of the budget category ? Many of us aren't interested in spending $100 a pop on a pocket knife for the tackle or glove box or something new to carry at work. Unless I'm mistaken the Tenacious is the only "full-size" Spyderco priced at the 30 dollar mark..........let's leave at least one model for those on a tight budget. YMMV

I have to agree I like the design but not the steel. I mean as far as entry level Spydercos go, wasn't that what the Byrd line was invented for.? It surprised me to see Spyderco move a product in their regular line over to China, when they already have a perfectly good thing going with Byrd. The G-10 Cara Cara is a great gift knife in basically the same attributes. The whole thing is no different than Benchmade's Red Class vs there other class. China knives belong in Red class and Byrds.

....because the Spyderco models that are being made in Japan and the US are going to to keep going up in price. Better to get "out ahead" of the trend and begin to "refine" production in China rather than get caught without a source for moderately priced, high quality product.
It's inevitable that in the future more of the Spyderco line will need to made in China if Spyderco wants to remain competitive. Mr. Glesser and company are working hard right now to find and "nurture" Chinese manufacturers that can and will in the future meet Spydeco's high standards. The current Byrd line-up and the Spyderco Tenacious are just the beginning.....one can only assume. I can only assume also, that since the current economic crisis is global, and China is not immune, Sal may be finding this a particularly challenging time.

That's fine. The OP never suggested removing the Tenacious. I'm glad there's a knife out there for the rest of the world. But I have no problem spending 100 on a knife I like a lot. Or 200, or 300.

But I haven't any need for low end folders. The OP and myself like the overall design of the Tenacious, but, given that we are participating in a higher end market, wish we could get that same design with all the bells and whistles.

I do wish that production in the less prestigious knife making areas of the world was isolated to Byrd at the moment. Whether or not the production quality is great, there is a strong association with lower quality products in the consumer minds in America. It will hurt Spyderco's reputation. I know that, among my knife collecting friends, Benchmade's red class has hurt their reputation. No longer is owning a Benchmade prestigious--now we have to qualify WHICH Benchmade.

.....parden the pun, but that must be "vex"-ing :D

It's a lot less ugly than the Byrd series. IMHO. Round hole opener, better fit and finish.

Sorry guys. I guess you're just going to have to deal with the shame and pain two high-end knife companies have caused you by bringing a working-class line into the picture.

A good solution for this might be to epoxy your purchase receipt to the handle or blade of your prestige-grade folders. If you really want to make an impression, you could highlight the purchase price.

I resolved my dilemma with a Stretch, Manix and a Benchmade Mini Dejavoo. I'm gonna figure out which 2 I like the best, but will keep all 3 if I can't figure it out.

You took the words right out of my mouth Gramps:) Let us not forget the purpose of the Tenacious, a knife at the 30 dollar price point for a reason.

Thanx much for the input and the request.

At this time, it's probably not likely. We have many models "in-the-works" and a higher line Tenacious is not in the current plan. We do have a smaller version of the Tenacious "in-the-works", but it will be made by the same maker in China.

Hi Bluenose,

We didn't originally plan to make a Round hole Spyderco in China. The Byrd brand, which is developing all of the time, was to be our low cost offering. The situation changed in the marketplace and it became necessary to complete with a "Round hole" model.

The byrd brand will have more lower cost offerings than the Spyderco Marque and as the designs evolve and the makers learn, I believe that byrd marque will find its place in the market.

Oh, don't worry about us. We bourgeois oppressors can just have whatever we want made. Merely a suggestion.
