Hello dear brothers,
Although I am a member here for quite some time, I think that this would be my first post - shame on me yet I promise to do my best and get in line with that
We (me and my lovely wife are in knifemaking business for something like 10 years now; some of you know us from BCUSA forums and some of you don't yet we are fully grateful to all brothers and friends over the ocean (we are from Europe) - thanks to you we are full time into knifemaking field and thanks Good God we have a 100% satisfaction rate in all these years.
Although we are creating bushcraft knives usually now we decided in something a little different.
For quite some time we were thinking to start attending knife shows and with God's good will next year we will try to hit at least one, not yet decided where and when but being on the 'to do' list we need to prepare.
This luxury puukko would be the 1st piece from the hopefully long series of build and improve that should follow until Spring. That would be my idea of how our knives should look by then and although there is lots of space for improving this guy turned out really nice in my tired knifemaker eyes
The build was made around some exclusive and unique materials (not because they never exist elsewhere but because they are made 'in house' and i am sure that they are really unique in their current form) like a nice piece of 'stripe' damascus (bolster) and the copper/brass Mokume Gane Center piece that as said are made by me. It was not an easy task to learn and adapt for such kind of forging techniques but thanks good God everything turned out fine.
By no mean i would say that the knife is perfect, yet it is a very well made pice of gear that looks good, is valuable and performs well.
So the app 3.5 " Hammered San Mai blade features a beautifully contrasting buffed line, an inlaid brass pill makers mark and cuts like crazy. Lots of time was involved in manually buffing the blade for the sharp contrasting line and not less for inlaying the brass pill for the makers mark that was also hand carved.
The handle itself was a lesson of art. Studying different concepts on the internet was the school that i had to consider before starting this journey. So starting from the blade back to the pommel we have a solid piece of 'stripe' 'in house' made damascus from iron and W1 steel that works as a bolster. The fit of this was the most difficult part as without glue it was not moving and the tang was entering in a perfect fit through it.
Next piece is Gabon premium grade Ebony that was manually carved and carefully buffed to a perfect shine.
Mokume Gane, a Japanese jewel metal is the next one, thin sheets of copper and brass were forged together and buffed to perfection in order to show the unique pattern. It took some time to have this done right as surface welding is quite tricky being the perfect limit between bonding and melting - sure thing that i melt my first few tries
The main body is a marvelous and unique piece of European 'yew eyes' - something that i assure you will not find easy; in fact i have never seen one beside of the 2 i made but i might mistake
The pommel itself is quite a detailed piece - thin golden brass, black v fiber and Gabon premium grade Ebony manually carved and carefully buffed. The 'cherry on the cake' here is the 'rain drop' Mokume Gane pill that fits nicely and perfectly in the rear of the knife.
That would be it, so if anyone is interested in such a jewel it's price being the first would be of 430 usd. I know is more than we used our friends with but honestly judging by the work involved and materials prices i sincerely did my best to keep it as low as possible.
If the buyer will also opt for a sheath that would add 65 usd and will be a fully custom one made especially to met this knife's standard.
All the best dear brothers, God bless,
Bogdan
