Prepping Maple

I got a nice maple haft at Blade show. It's fancy, but not extra fancy or anything. What kind of prep can I do so it will take a nice stain? It is sanded well already.

I usually mist it with water to open the grain a little prior to stain. Let the water dry over night before staining.
