Hi guys, first time posting on this forum but long time reader. I am curious how people shape their knife scales to be flush with the spine without ruining the spines surface finish. Specifically, I have purchased a stonewashed blade to practice putting my own scales on but in the process I had totally removed the stone wash all around the handle and the knife looked incorrect. Was I sanding too aggressively? Do makers usually shape the handle before they stonewash? Any advice would be very helpful.

The only way to preserve the finish is to shape the scales off of the knife. In the past, I've attached one scale to the knife with temporary pins, mark the outline of the tang and shape to the line, reinstall and fine tune from there. Hopefully that helps.

It's almost impossible to make them fit flush without doing it on the knife. You can shape them on the knife and then remove them and etch/stonewash the tang again. Then reinstall the handle.
