Would a peice of railroad rail serve as a good die holder? IE I'm going to weld the rail to the flange of the beam flat side up, to hold the tooling.I plan on welding stiffners in the web of the beam where the rail sits.

How big do you press guys usually make the dies? (how long of a rail should I cut while I have this borrowed chop saw)

Joe, how are you planning on mount'g the track????

I planned on doing a few passes with 9018 all the way around.maybe bevel for 1/2 penetration? I'm sure when I bring it to the union hall to weld there will be lots of suggestions fron the real welders.
My question is if it would be strong enough set up like that or should I have a seperate beam going all the way to the ground like on bertha?

I bolted a piece of rail to the top plate and just set a second one on the bottom plate. Then I use the rail to attach different dies to. For larger forging I just use the rail. For really large pieces I put I 6"wide plate on each piece. Now my press is not the standard issue either. Here is a 20lb billet using just the rails.

The guy I got it from used it to press copper roof shingles. It is huge and weighs close to 2 tons. 8" cyl and approx 50ton pressure. Moves material really nice. I just wish it fit into my shop.
