I have a 12 ton shop press and was thinking of modifying it with a 20 TON AIR/HYDRAULIC BOTTLE JACK from harbor freight to use as a welding press. Is this feasable????
I know I will have to make some dies but will the ram move fast enough or is there a better way?

WAY too slow.
For 20 tons, you need at least 11GPM pump to move the ram at 2-3 IPS. It will require a 4-5" cylinder and a 2-3HP motor (or a 5HP gas engine).

O well. Thought I'd get away cheep. At least I asked before I wasted $$$.
Thanks

Ig and Nowicki-meister,
Whatcha talking.....I can get a flat of habanero plants that are 6-or so inches tall, and plant them The cost is not real significant....
But if you would like , I will.....a flat is 50 or so plants......I could send all that I don't drown in Wadka to IG ...both of them (Smile)
Please let me know by e-mail I will be with family this weekend to maybe eat too much, and probably drink a bit too much.....fooy on probably.........
Thanks!

Speaking as a person who has personally bent a 12 ton hydraulic press with the 12 ton jack, the idea of combining one with 20 tons, motorization, and welding hot steel doesn't sound safe to me.

I was thinking of just the inital weld out of the forge. After that I'd use the power hammer.

On one of the blacksmithing websites, there is a picture of a bottle jack press where the guy used a mecahinical setup to pump the lever real fast like the wheel and piston setup on an old steam locomotive. Not sure how it would work in real life, but it was an interesting idea.

John, thanks but I have around 80 plants in the ground. I want to buy some peppers to make up my relish before September.
Have a good weekend Bro.

Chris Crawford has a walkthrough when he forged a small damascus billet, using a small 8 ton home-made press. He used it for the inital weld, then used a power hammer to drawing it out. It seems slow, but he got it to work.

Then look in the "Knife Info" section in his sight; it will be the second one in this section.
