I am not yet through with my forge, but would like to know something.I have a press, and am wondering if it will work to make demascus or do i need to hammer it or build a hammer.I have never tried demascus of any kind, but am going to try as soon as i am through with my forge.
Thanks,Keith

A forging press is one of the best ways to make damascus. IMHO the welds from a press are superior to ones formed by power hammering.

All hydraulic presses are not suitable as a forging press. Ram speed needs to be fast enough, as well as pressure.

Ok, I have a frame and a 4" ram with a 8" stroke. Know I don't need that much stroke, but how much of a pump (psi and displacement) and how much horse power to run it do I need to do a good job.

Keith,

Hand pump or motorized? what speed does the ram travel and how much pressure do you have?? These are some of the answers we need to say you can use it for forging.

IB 4" ram is a little on the small size but it can work. A 4" cyl with 2000 psi is 12.6 tons and with 2500psi is 15.7. I do not recommend going above 2500psi as it can be extremely dangerous. As far as a pump goes 2 stage 11gpm fast 2.9 slow will give 3.3inches per second in the fast travel mode and .7 in slow mode. That is pretty fast. An 8inch stroke is what I would consider the minimum when you begin thinking about tooling and fixtures. 5HP would be adequate.
