Pretend your Tom Hanks in Castaway

Since salt water is involved probably a Gerber LMFII with it's Sandvic 12C27 SS. Supposed to be a good knife for prying, cutting etc. Sheath comes with it's own sharpener.

Without a doubt, a Mark Terell Hardin (WSK) knife.

If it must be a fixed blade knife then a Fällkniven Thor. Ooops thats a 10 inch blade, oh well another inch won't hurt.lol. I'd actually prefer a good full sized axe, a sak (swisschamp) and a Mora or other quality Mora sized knife.

What materials would hold up best after years of use? After 5 years would you end up with an ice pick? How long will Micarta or G-10 last? Would titanium or Talonite be a good choice. It seems like Fallkniven gets the most mentions, is a laminated VG-10 good in these conditions. I would think a stainless would be the best choice. The coating on a tool steel blade would quickly wear off. I'm not a fan of serrations but it seems like a good idea in that environment except how do you sharpen it.

Thing is, you will be doing a lot of chopping, but also and a lot of skinning game/filleting fish. These require different optimal edge geometries. So I probably wouldn't got for a big Busse. I have to think that Tom Brown put a lot of thought into the WSK, so probably one of those with a 9" blade. But one area the WSK will have problems is in acting as a draw knife, if you need to build a shelter in lieu of a cave. So maybe a Bill Seigle 9" nessmuk would work best.

EDC? Fehrman Peace Maker, horizontal carry just left of my buckle -- BTDT, comfortable, easy to carry.
