Pretty little 103 skinner

I'll take one tomorrow when I get the time. I'm dealing on another Harley, so I may be tied up for a bit.

You keep that up and you'll end up with a Baker's dozen out in the barn. Do you have enough horse stalls park them all? Just kidding! What are you looking at this time?

To keep it Buck related, I think one of these will be great on my belt when riding this one. It has leather bags with concho's like these sheaths.

There was another guy looking at it but he didn't have the money. He has until noon today to come up with it or I get next shot at it. I've got the check made out already! :D They will take my Sportster either as a trade in or on consignment. I need it gone to have room for this one in the garage.

I like it!!! That bike sure is a classic looking Dave. How old is it?
Also, have your started strapping on fixed blade Bucks when you ride like Goose does? :)

Nothing new BG,

I have a few stag 192's with the wood insert's.

Really!! Is that the way things are gonna be now? I suppose it increases profits.

I had not seen that done before......I suppose because I tend to focus mostly on older knives. The Buff Horn 119 that I got recently was all Buff.

If they had just had thin strips of Buff on the outside and filled the rest in with plywood like this 103 I would have been amazed and astounded and.....sort of disappointed.

I'd feel the same about stag......were you surprised when you got your stag/plywoods?

Anybody got a picture of one of the new stag/plywoods?

Hi BG,

The 192's that I'm talking about are not new. The first one I got like that was one of the Cablea's Track series knives back in 04 or 05. At first I was caught off guard as I did not expect it. However, it is a wonderful idea as most stag with good bark will not fit on a fixed blade knife unless they remove a lot of the bark and that is my favorite part of the stag. It also lets the handles have a flatter side, lending you a better grip when wet and slippery with blood & gore from inside a chest cavity;).

Thanks, JB......I had NOT seen one of those before.

As to removing bark to make a good fit.......wouldn't they remove any excess stag from the inside of the slab?

Seems like the amount of bark showing on the outside would not be affected by that.

(?)

Dave,
I like that real sweet pink picked bone 103, I may have to get on for my daughter;). It really is a unique 103.

Thanks jb, I'll bet your daughter (;)) would love it.

It's a 2001. If the other guy manages to come up with the financing this morning, there's a beautiful 2008 set up nearly the same I may go for, but it's a whole bunch more money. Oh well, you can't take it with you I've heard.:D

Naww, I won't carry one of the fixed blades on it. Jack's making me a tan sheath similar to those for a 110. I'll see if he will make me a black one also.

Only if they were going to fit them together like your Buff 119, I have the Buff 124 that is like yours. The buff can be shaped and sanded, then fit together and you don't hardly even see the seam. The bark on the stag would be hard to get good matching pieces to put together and would still require sanding & shaping that would be very noticeable.

The Elk cut out has been sanded to fix the butt & guard (Hilt) removing all of the bark on one side and most of the bark on the other side. The BB Deer cut out is the wood insert slabs with good bark.

Sorry for jacking your thread Dave. We need to see a photo of you riding the new scooter with your new 103 on your belt!

No problem at all John, I kinda took it off on a tangent myself. Those are great looking Vanguards by the way.

I bet if I order her one it would come and be brown and not strawberry pink:(
Well....hummm, then i'd just have to keep it for myself:D

If you do and it's brown, then we can trade. That way you won't be forced to keep it yourself. ;)

I don't see why they'd be sanding the bark off. Wouldn't you do the bulk of your sanding and shaping on the INside of each slab?

Do any of our local knifemakers need to use plywood inserts on their knives???

Maybe they could comment on why they do or don't use the plywood inserts?

Less plywood, more stag......doesn't help much and still not for me.

I asked about the 103 over on the knifemaker forum and they seemed to think it looked pretty tacky and didn't understand why anybody would do it. Didn't seem to think it would save much money.

It would be nice if someone from Buck could comment as to the why and if they are going to continue with this.

Cost-cutting measures really bother me. The way they etch instead of stamping the blades on some knives really looks cheap and cheesy, too. My BG-42 blades are all stamped. Give me a good steel with a good, strong, old-fashioned stamp.......no etchings, no plywood, no lasers, no billboard blades.

But that's just me......I'd be willing to pay more for things done like that and I think maybe a lot of other people would be willing to pay a few bucks more to have things done the old-school way.

Got to be a market niche there, and it might be fairly significant.

I reopened this to post a picture of the same thing done by a master, Leroy. Seems like maybe Buck picked up on his technique!

That's a sweet looking knife Dave. How about posting the rest of the knife and some history on your LR knife. Leroy is truly a master knife smith, wish I lived in the SO CAL area, so I could drop in and bug him (ITE;)). On second thought, I'd be broke or divorced.....LOL.
