Prevent spaces between tang and handle material?

If you get a granite tile bring a reliable straight edge. I used a polished granite tile for a while when I started but eventually I checked it and it wasn't perfectly flat. Most probably are pretty flat but don't just assume it's flat. Check it before you buy it.
