yeah that's good, functional design! When I was about to order one, I was leaning more toward a squared back, but seeing the spikes lately, and realizing the squared portion wold only be 1/4 thick at most, I think you could really use the spike end to puncture, smash, open up etc things and still keep the blade "fresh" for more of a cutting application. I like this design a lot!
