Puma-Werk designed its White Hunter model in 1956 as an all-purpose knife for East African big game hunters. During the Vietnam War, it was very popular with U.S. military personnel as a private purchase combat knife, and most surviving examples reflect fairly extensive use. This example is lightly used, in overall excellent original condition and complete with its original leather sheath, green-and-gold box and paper inserts (see photos).
The knife measures approximately 10-⅝ inches in overall length with a stainless steel blade a bit over 6 inches long. A 1-⅛ inch section of the edge near the guard has a set of fine serrations and there's a 3-½ inch section of the spine that's been ground with a hatchet edge (see photos). The blade is marked “6377 / PUMA WHITE HUNTER / Genuine Pumaster Steel Germany” (see photos). The edge of the aluminum single guard is marked with the control number “96083” (see photos), which dates this knife to the third quarter of 1968.
The blade appears to still have its original factory edges, most of its original bright finish and clear markings with slight to modest signs of use, wear or carry (see photos). Some of the jimping on the spine just above the guard reflects heavier use (see photos). The stag handle scales are hefty and highly figured (see photos). The sheath is also in excellent original condition with its security loop, leg tie and showing signs of light to moderate use (see photos). The box and papers are in very good original condition with signs of storage wear appropriate to their age (see photos).
