Jeremy Robertson, Calavera Cutlery, Operator series #1
This knife redefines "Tacti-cool". The subdued “gun blue” steel looks great. The knife is advertised as a flat grind, but the way the grind is blended into the spine makes it look and feel more like a convex. I’ve never seen a grind like this before.
The grips are not the typical “slab” style, but instead it is more rounded and hand filling. It is very comfortable to hold. In the hand, the knife just fills solid and useful. It would also make a great utility or woods knife.
I’m not really into tactical style knives, but some designs are just too cool. This is one of them and I had to have it. I purchased this knife knowing it would not be a keeper. I wanted to handle, study and admire this knife, but I’m trying not to be a “collector”. It was a bit of an impulsive purchase, but I have no regrets. This is a nice knife.
Specifications-
- Blade: 4.75" (4” cutting edge)
-3/16" thick, Full tang construction
- A2 tool steel
- Flat Ground
- Convex edge
- Overall length: 9 3/8”
- rockwell 58 hardness
-Black canvas micarta handle, Fastened by 6 stainless #10 hex bolts.
The info below is from Jeremy’s web site:
“My name is Jeremy Robertson. I am the custom knife maker and owner of Calavera Cutlery located in San Diego County California. Making knives is my career as well as my passion. I endeavor to give my customers top notch quality and service.”
“I grew up in San Diego County and my interest in knives started when I was a child making them out of wood and copper. After going to college and flight school, I was an airline pilot for a number of years based on the east coast. On my days off I fell in love with knife making and eventually decided to go full time. I live in Carlsbad, CA, and enjoy the ocean and the mountains with my wife Jodi, and son Luke.”
“The name Calavera is Spanish for "skull". There is an extinct volcano here in Carlsbad that was on my ancestor's ranch that the Vaqueros (Mexican Cowboys) called Calavera. It is known today as Calavera Hills.”
“My knives are 100% hand made by me using the best materials available. All the raw materials I purchase from the steel to the handle material and the screws are made in the U.S.A. To me it's not made in the U.S.A unless the materials in the product are made here too.”
“A knife built for heavy use in the field. Very stout and well suited for any task. Ergonomic handle "Fits like a glove" and choil for comfort during long periods of usage. The steel used in this knife is A2 tool steel. Very tough, flexible, wear resistant and easy to sharpen. If you use a knife every day and you depend on it, this is the one for you.”
You can order this knife from Calavera Cutlery for $290.
I am asking $215 via PayPal. I will cover PayPal fees and USPS Priority Mail shipping in the US.

Mitchell Knives “Aurora”
This knife immediately impressed me by its simple, functional design.
After receiving it, I was taken by how light and nimble the knife was in my hand. The black micarta handles have nicely radiused edges that make it comfortable to hold. I also like the nice touch of dark red G10 liners that set off the handles.
I have never used, sharpened or carried this knife. I would be in mint condition if not for the dreaded “kydex kurse”.
I enjoyed holding, studying and just admiring this knife. Each time I would remove and replace it into its kydex sheath. It took a while, but I realized that the kydex was leaving faint scratches or polishing up parts of the blade. I’ve retouched my flat grind blades before using 00 and 0000 buffing pads with good results. I tried this on the Aurora and the result was OK, but it was difficult to work with due to the change in grind from primary to swedge. It would take more work to buff out the kydex scratches. I tried to take pics that would show the kydex marks, but just couldn’t capture them properly. It’s all about the lighting and the angle observed.
The knife includes a basic kydex sheath with no clips.
I like this knife, but I know I will never use it. The Aurora deserves a better home.
I paid $225 in 2010 but will discount for the kydex scratches/buffing.
Asking $190 via PayPal. I will cover PayPal fees and USPS Priority Mail shipping in the US.

Below is the description of this knife by Johnathan Mitchell:
“I call this model the Aurora. It is a large EDC knife that performs as well as it looks. If you like knives that are optimized for cutting, this one is for you. This would also make a great defensive knife due to the excellent edge geometry.”
“The handle is "double black" canvas micarta, with dark red G10 liners and aluminum pins. I use G10 for my liners as it is more resistant to shrinkage and finishes nicer. The handle is extremely comfortable in any grip.”
“This knife is ground on a 14" contact wheel, almost to the spine. The height of the grind is just over 1", making it an amazing cutter. The edge geometry on this knife is absolutely fantastic. I'm am sure that you will be delighted with the cutting performance.”
- A2 (Precision Ground)
- 60 HRC
- 1/8 Stock
- Satin finish
- Hollow ground
- Crazy Sharp
