Do you guys and gals have set price limits on what you will spend on a knife? If so, what is it? I won't spend more than $200 on a knife.

So far $400 been the most but if I think it's worth it, and I have the money to spend the answer would have to be no, I have no limit. ;)

Depends on the knife.

$150 is comfortable for the right knife.

I'd love to have Spyderco Manix sprint runs but the always go north of $200. I'm not emotionally ready for that much yet.

So far on a knife what I am willing to spend is around $1000 max at the moment. Quite a lot to some people and it is to me as I am a college student, but I know how to be smart with money. That means I would buy 1 custom a year if I spend that much, but sometimes it ends up being 2-3 customs a year as I just got into customs a few months ago as I have moved up in taste and price range substantially in the last 6 months. That is just me though and it is quite a big deal anytime I spend a few hundred on a knife or even a $100 many times. When I add everything up though it is usually worth it to me and knives tend to hold their value well like guns.

It has changed over the years, especially since joining this forum! The most I have spent is $975, but I don't see ever spending that again because so many great knives can be bought for so much less. Once you get to about $500 or so, you are paying for a name or reputation not any better build quality IMO.

I've been in the $700 range on several occasions, but not happy with it.
I think that $400 is about my max for quite a while to come.

The most I have spent is $500 (unique Sebenza). However, I don't usually go much about $150. I will make exceptions, though.

$1000=

about 20 Kershaws/Gerbers/Moras/etc.

about 8-10 decent Spydercos/Benchmades/Beckers/etc.

2 Sebenzas/Busses

1 fancy custom

Just depends on which one of the above you want, or some of a few types.

my limit is, I only spend as much on tools, as I expect to get back from them. If i buy a hundred dollar knife, i better get a hundred dollars worth of use out of it.

My price limit has increased over the years. At one time I thought spending $30 was "enough knife". Now I'll go as high as $150 but I have a hard time justifying anything over that.

I've held and played with knives in the $500 to $1K range but it's hard to see how they would cut any better than my more pedestrian production blades. I'd also feel like I had to baby such an expensive knife. It's no good to me sitting in a safe. And I'm not into the game for investment value.

And besides, I've got too many other more expensive hobbies to throw money at.

(That's not to say I may not splurge for a Sebenza or some such knife in the future. Sometimes you just get the itch.)

$500. My collection is very small. Couple of micarta sebs, Orange DGG SnG, Jim Burke custom, Busse TGLB, ZT 0801 and a few slipjoints mainly.

Usually around $200-300 for a pocket knife; usually around $300-500 for a kitchen knife.
