What's considered a good price on 52100 ball bearings?

There's a local guy that has 1" for $1.50 and 2" for $10--these are new. Just curious. . .

Well a 1" ball would have a volume of 0.524". Steel weighs about .283# per " so you get about .149cu.in. per bearing. Which means it would take 6.7 bearings to equal a lb. That means you are paying about $10 a lb for the 1". The 2" balls have a volume of 4.2cu. in and a weight of 1.18# so it figures out to about $8.50 per lb. Once you take out the labor and forge fuel to get them flat. I would think you could do way better. By the way bearing that have 52100 balls also have 52100 races and those would probably work better for forging.

If I wanted to use 52100 I would ask around. I am sure you can do better.

I wasn't necessarily looking for it, but an opportunity came along. Local guy who used to be a sales rep for a bearing company retired and had tons of samples accumulated from over the years. I'll be picking up some pillow blocks from him for like $5 a piece for a NWG, and he had the balls too so I thought I'd check, and if it was worth it, then set them aside for the future.
