Should prices be redacted in knife exchange after items are sold?

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but I’m curious as to why prices in the knife exchange get redacted after the sale? The first time I sold a gun on the bullseyeforum, I redacted my price after the gun sold, as I’d seen being done on other forums and I got spanked by the mod for doing so. The mod explained that they require the sales price to remain as it gives buyers and sellers a guide as to what market prices are, both reasonable and absurd. After being corrected, I had to agree. So, what say you?

Thanks, Dave

I’m against the practice for sure. But, I think people do it so they keep the knowledge advantage over newer people. Since I get email notifications of new posts, I keep them all in a folder so I can refer back to the original
asking prices.

I get the email notifications too. ‘Guess I didn’t realize if you click on your notification, it would take you back to the original post, with the prices.

I generally do keep my price in place after a sale. I don't have anything to hide nor should the buyer. I have rarely been asked to remove my price after a sale, and IIRC, I declined. I think it is helpful for other buyers & sellers alike even if the price may no longer be relevant to the current market.

I'd prefer it if people left the price, that's really useful market pricing data we're all generating with each other, seems a shame to throw it away.

That said, I've removed it once at the buyer's request.

Some automated way of capturing pricing data and making it available to paying members would be an interesting perk.

In a democracy ... it should be seller's choice.

Prices change with market demands. It's worth what someone is willing to pay. Just because someone got a good deal, or paid up, does not justify that the price should remain the same for it or like items according to past sales.

I've paid up for several and also gotten occasional deals. At the time of said purchases - I was satisfied and what's most important. 😉

Not having price references is certainly a detraction to sales on the site because price listings are all over the place. Some are way high, some low.

Personally I moved buying and selling to somewhere else in part because prices get left up so that folks can research the market and price things more reasonably from the start. It is a rule that the price a knife sold for is put/kept in the post.

Given how useful BF is as a repository for knife information, longer term as well I feel that not keeping prices in posts is lost information that makes BF less of a reference to the knife world.

All that said, I don't blame mods or BF for not wanting another rule to enforce. Also, for awhile I started removing all prices when I sold here because I had multiple buyers ask me to. It just became easier to edit it out when I was marking it sold than have to go back later if the buyer asked me to later. I get why folks would do it.

It can be good to leave them up in my opinion…but it should be actual selling price. Just cause a certain knife says $500 doesn’t mean it wasn’t sold at, say, $350 through DM. Enough of these examples and you have false data for pricing.

Just food for thought.

Agree about sellers choice in a forum like this.

But, I’m not sure why people want it redacted. Take Gunbroker - you can research sold prices, but that does not inhibit some auctions going really high and others that end up a good deal. So, having records of sales price doesn’t keep anyone from buying or selling at the price they want. I know I’ve gotten good deals, and I also know I’ve paid more than I maybe could have for something I really wanted.

To clarify, when I get email notifications of new for sale posts, the body of that new post is in the notification email, which most always includes the price. I save that email which I can refer back to for the asking price. If you click the link to view the post on Bladeforum you will not see the original, if it has been edited.

My knee jerk reaction to seeing a price removed is someone is trying to hide something. If there's a good reason for this I'd love to know.

Hide what?

Well, I mean, besides the price they listed. 🙃
I'm personally adverse to ripping anyone off but if I found a sucker willing to pay silly pricing from not knowing any better and was embarrassed to do it then I might want to hide that fact from view.

If the seller chooses to leave it up that's fine. But he should not be forced to. It should be up to everyone to decide what they want to do. Which, I might add, is the view Spark has always had.

I always ask a seller to remove the price after the sale is concluded because what I payed for something is no-one's business and strictly between me and the seller.

Even though I change the thread title to SOLD I've gotten inquiries on the availability long after the knife has moved on to its new owner due to my (previous) leaving the price in the ad.
Probably due to most everyone removing their prices.
So now I just remove the price to emphasize the fact that the item is no longer available.

Definitely hadn't thought of that perspective and I get the point. I don't like it but I still high five the the feeling of it really being no one's business. Ugh. I wish more things in life were less murky and shades of gray.

Consider this......Most folks no longer want to accept Paypal G&S because of the implications. Do you now really want the whole world to know what you sold something for??

Once again I am all for free choice. But if someone wants privacy it should be respected and allowed.
