While I have been making knives for several years, and selling a few here and there I have only recently really started pushing them. I think this is probably an issue that many of you (most more experienced than me) have faced. How do you decide the selling price for your knives?

Before you get dinged for it, you should read the rules that we have all agreed to upon joining this board. One must have the proper membership level to discuss sales and use your business name as your username.

Past that, demand dictates what you can change for your knives. Typically I take the cost of materials (all of them) and multiply it by 3 for a base price.

Only you will know what you can charge. As mentioned, it depends upon demand, which depends upon your skill and craftsmanship. My first 5 knives were given away for free. From there, I first added $90 to the cost of materials, then $110, then etc. . . . I still don't recover enough to justify my work.

Your price should gradually increase as more people desire your work and your finish. It is a typically a slow process.

I feel like, with this and every revenue generating venture I've been involved with, by the time you are ready to start selling at a level where you are generating a stream from outside your friends and family, you will know the answer to that. If it is a question you can't answer yourself, maybe you aren't ready to push that hard.

I only say this because 1. Your first question here was about selling and price. No introduction to speak of and no biba fides. 2. By that time you should have been exposed to the broader marketplace, see other works, annd probably know where you stack up with QC. 3. What I ask for my knives is going to be different than anyone else on the planet. Some take in to account materials more. Some take labor more. Some take infrastructure more. And some take demand more into account. The reason why is we are almost all affluent in one dept but flat broke in the others.

Introduce yourself, show some work, tout the resume a bit and make friends.

Welcome! And yes, read the rules. Wouldn't wanna get poo'd on the first post.

Welcome to Shop Talk. Reading the rules and filling out your profile should be the two first things you do when signing up.

You can't discuss or display any info on selling knives if you aren't a knifemaker member. There is a sticky at the top of the Shop Talk page about that. I will close this thread. Please don't discuss selling and sales in the future unless you are a knifemaker membership level.
