priciest sodbuster ever?

No doubt the store is adding a little bit to make a profit, but its far from outrageous.
Those knives are handmade by a single person (who also happens to be a respected member here).
It says right in your link that it takes two days to make each one.
What do you think is a fair price for the materials and 14 hours or so of work from a highly skilled craftsman?
Not to mention the other incidental costs that he incurs...

I have a KnutBuster from Kerry Hampton that cost more than this one and I was happy to pay the price.
Think the OP's sticker shock might be due to a lack of familiarity with the price of handmade knives.

A Tony Bose sodbuster price might just give him a stroke, lol!

Not ridiculous at all. You obviously haven't looked at the current custom slipjoint market. It takes tremendous skill to make a slipjoint perfectly.

Good looking piece of work to me, and no for a handmade custom the price doesn't seem outrageous, actually seems somewhat reasonable.

What gets me about sites like those are the sensationalist descriptions. Like this one.
content_utility-knife-carbon-steel.jpg

"These blades are made of high carbon steel, one of the hardest metals used to make tools. Because of its exceptionally fine grain, high carbon steel can be given a much sharper edge than other alloys. The blades are extra thick to provide better stability and precise handling and adjustment."

I mean, without stating what steel it is it seems like these sentences are only there to draw in customers whether or not what they said was true. There's no backing that claim. It's not just this site either; pretty much all of them with a similar setup of products does so.

That being said I like most of these sites. I just now realize that their ability to find attractive and *usually* high quality products is only second to their ability to market them. Uncrate.com is one of my favorites but they pedal Gerber stuff all the time.

It's not so much how the sites are upselling products that bothers me; it's that the customers will echo the same descriptions, not knowing how low on the bar they actually shot for. Doing proper research is low these days...

The knife maker Gene Wiseman is a member of BF and has an excellent reputation for quality traditional knives.

I don’t think the price is that much out of line based on some of the prices I have seen Gene’s work sell for.

I really like the Red one:

You can zoom in on the picture on their website...the quality appears to be "Off the Hook!"

Great Job Gene Wiseman!

Aside from the uber upscale quality of this knife, it has one feature I consider essential in a sodbuster, a proper, full sized bird's eye pivot. It also has a nice to have, and rarely offered feature, a lanyard hole.

What's wrong with having a custom Sodbuster
I kind of like my KHnutbuster:p

I just picked one up on the exchange for much less, it's a very nice knife. It is considered a custom blade, they run much more in price and are of better quality. K. Hampton, K.Johnson and G.Ingram all make excellent sodbusters for that price range.

Well that's just great. Now I'm gonna start looking at custom traditionals and that'll just be one more knife subsection that will start draining my wallet. Thanks for the education guys!

Agreed. Gene Wiseman has some amazing skills.

A hand made slip joint of high quality materials, that price is not out of line. Blade of D2???? Sounds like a great pocket knife to me.

Is it more expensive than production slip joints? Sure. That would not be out of line for many custom makers at all. There are custom makers who put out custom single blade slip joints for less all the time. But if the quality is there, it is worth it.

Did some research, his work is fantastic. Prices are a little less here on the forums but they get snapped up fast. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

Beautiful knife! Totally worth it
Interesting website/shop. Some stuff looks really cool and of quality but the prices are high. $24.90 for a magnesium firestarter that looks like the one other sites sell for $4.95.
I see CountyComm products for (re)sale at inflated prices.

$138 for a Mercator folding knife.

$229 for a EDC keychain set up!

Who pays these prices. The Sodbuster's price seems like the most reasonable given the workmanship etc. Other stuff that are reselling at huge markup.

Little background....

I have been collecting handmade knives for almost 30 years.....and only got into custom slipjoints about 10 years ago.

Even amongst the "bigger" names in the business of building slipjoints, I have had some disappointments....it is THAT hard to build a great slipjoint.

.....and so...after 10 years of collecting them, I have a nice 12 knife grouping that shows off U.S. craftsmanship in slipjoints to a high degree.

I'll bet Mr. Wiseman deserves his regard within this sector of knifemaking and I salute him(and will be looking for examples of his work at any show I attend)!

Best Regards,
