I did a quick search on both this forum and google. I couldn't find anything. I recently bought a strider and my question is, If i ever wanted to sell it how much would i go for. A base model SNG to be exact. Bought it for $400. Is it something that will go for a exact price if there are no user marks? or will it go for a little more or a little less. This is my first high end production knife and i would like a little knowledge.
Please keep the BS to a minimum. Be straight with me.
Thanks,
Tom

No bs,I wouldnt pay full retail price for a used knife, even if said knife was only took out of bag and fondled Im not gonna buy used when I can buy new too(speaking of your basic run of the mill knives). Ive bought and sold a few striders, never got my money back in full, but they do hold their value better than some other brands.

Depends really.

If it's LNIB then price it at original price and ignore any low ball offers, there will be plenty of those.

If it's been sharpened etc Price it in the $350 range and hold strong at that price.

They will sell, they do hold their value well.

I sold all 5 of mine and got what I wanted for all of them, just have to hold strong.

There's no way to answer your question, it's like asking "I just bought a car, what can I get for it if I sell it?"

What you ask for it will depend on so many variables. What are other similar models being bought for? What is it's value to you?? How much wear has the knife seen, are there blemishes, scuffs, has it been reprofiled at all, how is the lock up, blade play after use, etc.

There is no cookie cutter "You should expect to receive $XXX for it." type of answer.

If it goes entirely unused during your ownership and it's not a rare SnG configuration, don't expect to get the full $400 for it. Somewhere between $350-370 is more likely. If you do use it, expect $300-330 for it. Pricing it at $300 will get it sold in a few hours at most, that's where I priced some of my user SnG's and I had no trouble moving them.

Photos are important, good photos at all angles and with good lighting to show the condition, and close ups too.

Don't ever take anything that makes you feel like you just got raped. ;)

Because if you feel that way then you really did.

There are always people out there that will low ball thinking they will get something for nothing, totally ignore them, they aren't worth the time. And most of them will do is get it at that low ball price and put it right back up for sale someplace else for what you should have got for it in the 1st place.

If it's LNIB never take less than $20 - $30 of the original price.

If it's used and still in good condition then maybe drop it like $50 - $70 depending on condition.

Bottom line is set your price, what you really want for it and stick to it and you will get it if you wait.

I'd price a LNIB base configuration SnG at about $350 or so, and be sure to take plenty of good pictures.

For me, the best time to sell is before you're really needing/wanting the funds for something else. That way you can name your price and if you don't get any bites in 2 weeks time you can either relist it for a little less or just hang on to it. You can also do price drops in those first 2 weeks but they can be fairly ineffective depending on how far your thread is knocked down the list.

Thanks guys! Your comments really gave me some knowledge. I'm obviously not looking to sell now being that I just got it but it gives me an idea for when I do want to sell it. I can definitely tell by your answers that it holds it value a lot better than a cheaper production knife.

Not an investment knife, I question sometimes how it can be worth even $400.

having said that, every Strider I have owned and sold lost about 15-20% when I went to sell it.

They maintain like a sebbie IMO>
I payed about $345 for very good condition SMF knives in different configurations. 2 of them. One black with flame handle and the other all stone wash.
