Primal/Tactical SERE knife

Stuart - Yes, I do. :D I enjoy making a quality tool that gets put to work.

Rockspyder - This wrap is new for me and I haven't put it through the situation you describe. However, if you look at the last picture of the batonning, it looks like he did baton on the butt to drive the point through and apparantly the handle wrap held up.

I made a discovery this week, though: Minwax Wood Hardener does a better job of impregnating the paracord than suplerglue. It's thinner than water and doesn't seem to be nearly as finicky about the weather as CA, while hardening just as much or more. It has the side benefit of not making fumes that irritate my sinuses and eyes while working with it, and finishing with a more matte finish. That's going to be my new approach until I find a reason not to use it.
 
Thanks Storm Crow. I might have to give it a shot on something (cord wrap, and the wood hardener). I have a couple of skeletal handles I could try it on. It is just finding the time to figure out the good weaves, and then doing it.

Rockspyder - It takes a bit of persitence, but if I can do it with my total lack of knot and braid skills, you probably can as well. :) I want to name a daughter "Persistence Tenacity" when I have children, but the future wife disapproves. "Persistence Tenacity Helm, you get in here right this instant!" See? Rolls off the tongue. :D I'd call her Pert or 'Squite Tree for nicknames.

What? you don't like the feeling of inhaling about an oz of Wasabi while doing a handle? :) I will definitely be trying the Minwax wood hardener soon. I tried epoxy on one with a jute cord wrap and got better results than the first time, but I'm still not quite happy with it.

Rockspyder, if you'd make it to PWYP this year, I could show you n person. :) (Yeah I know, new Jeep, etc,etc)

Randy, been thinking about PWYP. I have even been trying the various frames with various packs for the survival part. I'm just going to have to see how it works out.

PWYP= Practice What You Preach. It is a get-together that Terril Hoffman has on his ... estate?... mountain?... every year in the spring, April time-frame. A combination camp-out/swap-meet/survival-class/zombie-shoot, all rolled into one weekend. It draws people all the way from FL to ME to MI, I believe. It has gotten quite large.

Great job! That wrap is real nice and I might need to get on your list for one like that.......even though I haven't had a chance to use the other two I got from you yet. :o

Stormcrow, you'd have a great time at PWYP. bring something with a 10" or so blade for the CHOPPING CONTEST, :)
 
Can't make it, Randy. It's going to take all I can do to get ready for my table at the Blade show and then go. That'll be my big trip for the year.

Sounds like fun, though. 10"? Ain't that a bit small? :)

I really like the knife! Quick question if you don't mind. Did you use a power hammer to flatten out the material or was it done by hand? Only curious as I know 3/4 can be a bit difficult to do by hand.
 
Lunadam - Yep, I used Gunnhilda, my home-brewed "Rusty"-style guided helve hammer with a 100 lb. ram to do the heavy lifting. I hope to get some video up soon of me forging out my new personal carry knife on her, which was forged from 3/4" round. Shorter blade with a bit different shape and the same style of wrap in neon orange and black, sealed with Minwax Wood Hardener instead of superglue. Just need to build a sheath for it and I'll post pics.
