Also, y'all are right about my description. I went into too much detail about it, when I don't even know exactly what it is. I'm going to put "1800s Blacksmith Made Camp Knife" or something similar, and leave it at that.

I also decided that since I have Confederate knives that I KNOW are 1800s, I'm going to stop looking for only old knives, and I'm going to start focusing on new blacksmith made knives. I've found some awesome sellers on Etsy who are smith's that make some great looking Bowies, and they are in the South. Southern made, just like I like! Lol and it helps out small businesses.

Here's some more up close pictures. What's up with those shiny spots? It looks like someone took a dremel and tried to grind off some of the rust. The handle also seems to have a newer coating of staining or something. Seems like someone did some work on it to "try" to clean it up to sell it. And I only paid $25. Wonder why they didn't just leave it rusty?

People who arent into knives or whatever else always seem to want to "clean up" old vintage knives with beautiful patina. I know I did it a couple times when I was a kid. I remember one time the old vintage knife my grandpa gave me got a tiny bit of surface rust on it. In my head I just thought 'Oh, simple. I just clean it with a little sand paper'. Went in the garage and found a piece, some 80 grit, I found out later and scratched the hell out of the tip with just a couple swipes. That's the day I learned about different sand paper grits and softer abrasives.

It is not a primitive knife. It is not a blacksmith knife. Blacksmiths didn’t make knives cutters did. And,fur traders had access to good commercial knives; which they may have handled or sheathed, but which would have stated with quality commercial blades. To me this looks like an amateur modified machete or corn knife. Whether someone wanted something to use in their garden or some kid wanted his very own version of the Iron Mistress no one can say. It would be a mistake to attribute age based on shoddy craftsmanship.

Guardless fighting knife... not a cool way to lose your fingers... being injured by your own blade at the attempt of stab isn't really cool...
