My son and I just returned from a 4 day Primitive Skills class presented by Kyle Chamberlain through the Moses Lake Park and Recreation.

The 4 day class covered flintknapping, cordage making with native plant fibers, firemaking with hand and bow drill and a field day as hunter/gatherers looking for native edible plants.

I must say that I have never made fire before and it was a good feeling to know that I could create fire with a hand drill and bow drill.

Kyle is a Moses Lake native and is well skilled in stone age living skills. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed the 4 days and hope to participate in future Primitive Skills classes with Kyle again. He does the Rabbitstick Rendezvous which we plan to go to next year.

That's really neat. I have never tried the bow drill and plan to this summer but it would be great to have someone experienced overseeing. I spent all of 24 hours in Moses Lake - 18 May '01, but I didn't get to do anything that cool!
