Prince Harry with the Gurkhas

yep, saw that one on tv not too long ago, another good version. avoided the cartoon backgrounds in some scenes in olivier's one which were intended to make it more shakespearian...

Heres a fuller picture of Harrys kukri, is it a HI piece? The bolster looks like it could be? but ive only owned one HI & only handled a few others, so you guys would know better than I.

It would be interesting to pin down which maker supplied the Royal kukri.

yup, some arse paperazzi reporter painted a big red x on him and said here he is being a FAC, come shoot him and his men, breaking an agreement that the news would keep it quiet till he finished his tour and they'd get a zillion pictures then; like the reporter in the die hard flics, the 'news' leakers needs a good punch in the nose.

:jerkit: Looks to me it's rather like the leather-sheathed version of the NKH "dhankute".

Re: Cpl's post...

Sen McCain, of course, has also seen the elephant (& more than most). He also has one son in the marines, another in the Navy (Annapolis at the moment).
I certainly agree, the British Royals have a good tradition there. I too think it would be admirable if more American bigshots did the same.

:jerkit: Definatly! thats what I thought. :D No mistaking its not a Tora despite anyones wishfull dreams though. :p

maybe NKH, there bolsters are not usualy that long though I think?

despite fantasys of it belonging to a Gurkha & given to him on induction, hes just as likly to have go a mate to get it of the internet.....

Yep well & truly yanked Danny, hes live target for a hit of the hidden terroists in UK know I guess as well. :(

18mm/19mm on what I think is one of them that I'm holding right now.... and if it is the same, the bolster looks long when the kukri is in its sheath; guess it's to do with the shaping of the handle and scabbard combined.

mmm interesting, Ive got an old villiger with 20mm bolster here, & it looks a tiny bit shorter than Harrys bolster, but as you say the grip & scabbard handle can play a role.

Yep, good eye there on the NKH ID Seaice. I bought a bunch of NKH before discovering HI, and even a few afterwards, and am sure it's one of theirs. Might be KH, but I doubt it. Definitely not HI. It also looks like a standard wood scabbard to me. (?)

They have those super pointy handle tips at the back swell. Frankly too much of a good thing except maybe for those with smallish hands. The handle swell on the chitlangi and chainpuri are big improvements over the standard handle, locking your hand in the harder you swing, but of the modern kukris only HI has the design down. (I don't believe Tora offers a model with that type handle.)

Looking at my NKH's the closest I can get to this pic is a 15.5" 16 oz. Chainpuri with what I have called satisal. Unlike HI, KH, or Tora, it's hard to tell the wood as NKH ruins most of their wood handles IMO by dipping them in some kind of drip-dry hard finish. Once you sand that off there's some decent wood there..

I meant leather-covered wood rather than uncovered wood as some of theirs are.... in the big picture of what he's carrying, it is the stitched seam of the scabbard that's showing as a line down the middle.

One of several reasons I'm hooked on the Chitlangi design.

I find the handle style of the Chitlangi fits my hand perfectly. The pommel swell is plenty big for good anchoring, but it's not too big or awkward either. Plus the back point on the chitlangi pommel fits the crease at the base of my palm better than any other handle style.

On my 26" Chitlangi, the handle is shaped just right enough that if I need to, I can hook two fingers from my left hand over the tip of that pommel and deliver a two-handed blow from it, which is devastatingly powerful.

wot? wear old trousers, wide open throttle, waste of time, web of trust, woman on top, war on terror?

i hate tla's, he's a marine. that's a proud enough designator.
