Priority Mail

I still use Priority Mail because the boxes, tape and labels are free, the colors are high visibility, I know exactly what my rates are and I have never had a lost, stolen or damaged package. It has been consistent for me and I am happy with that.

I have never had a problem with priority mail (knock on wood). I've been using it for sending knives for over 5 years now and my knives are usually delivered in 2-3 days and I've never had one go over 4 days. Prices are reasonable and with delivery confirmation is an unbeatable combination.

I've been using Priority Mail exclusively for the past couple of years. Now with the insane rate hikes and zoning for packages 2# or greater.. it might be time to start looking for alternatives.

UPS bites, so my only other alternative seems to be FedEx Ground (Home Delivery) for heavier items.

I think the lag in Priority Mail as the article mentions could be specific employees along the chain. Some post office employees are on-the-ball and are great, whilst others seem to watch the cobwebs grow on the clock.

I've never had a problem in the past several years and many parcels later........

My experience with USPS Priority Mail only started about 18 months ago and my shipping, both incoming and outgoing has not been extensive (about 50-60 shipments).

I have been very satisfied with USPS Priority Mail service as it has without exception been excellent. This includes both items sent to and received from locations on both coasts and in the middle and the time in shipment has most often been less than the 3 day they advertise. Nor have there been any late, damaged, mis- or non-deliveries.

Even with their increased rates they are still my preferred means of shipment.

Priority mail used to be good to me prior to 9/11, but since then they really have not done a good job. Thirty days for priority mail is just plain absurd (read here for details on that debacle). The only reason I use it is because it's either pay the 4 bucks for priority or the 15 for FedEx or UPS (I live in Hawaii). And I choose it over 1st class because you just have to get delivery confirmation and insurance which are not available with 1st class.

Not that it justifies the rate raise, but you can now get delivery confirmation on 1st class mail.

Yeah, I just noticed that--that's definitely an improvement. The rate raise doesn't actually bother me too much. I don't mind paying for something as long as I get what I'm paying for. With priority mail I'm paying for 3-5 day shipping. In this case 7 days would be acceptable, 9 is pushing it, but 30 days? That's 6-10 times what was advertised. Granted that they don't guarantee 3-5 days, but if you're not gonna follow through, then don't advertise it.

USPS Global Priority works very well for me into Canada. About 5 days from anywhere in the USA to my door in a small city.

I just received a package, Priority Mail from Topeka, Kansas to San Jose, California. Paid for it on Monday afternoon (PayPal), it was shipped late Monday Afternoon (Kansas time) and I received it Wednesday morning (California Time). That is pretty good. However, I've had some other packages which took significantly longer.

Priority Mail didn't use to be a problem for us either but it seemed like after 9-11 packages were not getting to the intended destination for sometimes 2 to 3 weeks!! So started useing UPS instead and really prefer their service because it does get to the destination absolutely when they say it will and also UPS has a great website and I can track exactly where that package is and who signed for it once delivered or where it was exactly placed (porch for example) and of course we insure it for the cost of the knife, which the same goes for Priority when we have to ship to Hawaii or use Priority Global Express. Glad to hear the USPS has gotten better although. Cavelady

Four days ago I ordered stuff from Duluth Trading in Wisconson and Delta Z in California. Both Priority Mail shipments arrived this morning -- great service by USPS, Duluth, and Delta Z.

The delays after 9/11 would have hit UPS and FedEx, too, if anyone had sent anthrax through their systems. It's too bad about the delays, but USPS just didn't want any more workers to die, so they had to clean up, irradiate mail, and so on.

It's back to normal now, though.

(I don't get much by FedEx, but UPS drops off the occasional eagerly awaited package, and I haven't had a problem with them, either.)
