Pristine Appearance vs. Well-Worn: Which Do You Prefer?

Firkin, hasn't the state of California found politicians to be carcinogenic? And to cause mutations in cockroaches?

I can't think of any edged tool in the house that hasn't been used. Some show a lot more use than others. Some of the small khuks don't show use so much being used in the kitchen more than any place else.

I'm sorry I just looked up on the wall and there is one tool that I haven;t scared up. My CS Battle Axe hasn't done much and now that I have the khuks it may not get much to do.

I try to keep handles treated, blades oiled and polished at least every couple of weeks. Summer is coming and it will be time to go back to work on all kinds of growth.

I agree with the idea of not abusing the blades but a good workout doesn't hurt the blade. And, that statement about building confidence in the blade makes good sense.:)

Both. Use the 18" Sher AK all the time, will be using the Sanu HI Bowie, and perhaps the Sanu YCS (but not until the others are gone or broken--it's perprtually 'on deck')

The HI Falcata--no usie, just cuts air and paper.

Ive never liked shiny blades. Always prefered a nice worn look. Probably cuz Im used to Philippine stuff, and old blades. However, with HI khuks, Ive not etched all of them. For some reason, the AK's screamed to me, to be etched, but the others, didnt. Then again, I really only use my 12" AK, the rest are hanging up. Dont really have many trees to chop down, and the few times I did, the 20" siru, and the 18" WWII, were surprisingly ok afterwards. Anyways, I figured if the Kami's wanted to make em so nice and shiny, Id leave it shiny, especially if I aint a using it. But then, the collection is starting to become unwieldy, so I dunno how much longer theyll stay shiny.

That's a good point Rusty, although I note that hasn't prevented shite from being incorporated into "processed foods" so far. And I definately did not recommend the consumption of such products.

As far as the topic goes, I can't imagine myself owning a firearm rendered useless by it's barrel being filled with cement, just like I can't imagine owning a tool not prepared to fulfill it's purpose, or a painting locked in a dark safe where no-one can see it.

I do have to admit that I am swayed by the tempting offerings of J.P. to become a "collector" though. Wish I could. While I appreciate a patina from use, I don't think I could resist oiling the handles or keeping a blade sharp on a hand-made tool intended for use by it's maker. I do abuse some throw-away mass-produced tools, but I don't think I could keep my hands off of a piece that gave me the "vibe" when I picked it up.
