Probably a stupid question...alaskan guide stag 110 scales...

I just received my first non wood 110. It's the Alaskan Guide with stag scales. Now this might stupid as I know that each piece of stag is different...

Question is...

Is it normal for one scale to be a different shape than the other as far as how much it sticks out from the knife itself? The right side (when looking down on spine) sticks out a lot more than the left and has a completely different shape.

Is that how they all are? Do they sculpt the scales based on the stag pattern as opposed to matching sides?

Thanks a lot :)

With real Stag, yes you can get stuff like that.

I've seen a few knives over the years with Stag thicker on one side, although it shouldn't be to severe.

yes it is common to see that ...
it is to be expected in any knife you spend less then 500$ for ...
at over 500 you expect the sides to match very close...
on any thing less then 250 you dont worry on that at all!
heck even deer dont match side to side any more ...
cheep deer !

Does anyone else here have uneven shaped scales as well? And if so, any pics to see how mine compares?

Yes aza77,

I agree where are your pics; so we all can see what you see.

humm when i take them out again for play time if i rember to i will take a pict.,,
i have quite a number of stag and one i do recall is like 1/8 inch diff..
but that is the way it grows...
only time i have not liked the stag was a FAT side that they sanded almost all the bark off of... had only about 1/4 to 3/8 inch of any bark...
it was a club issue s30v drop point nickel & FG
that was takeing highly visable spot in my displays
i did ask if they could replace that one..
while they wont do that offten.. they did that time...
and i got one back with out finger groves which made it a one of two known!
now some would say knives like this are "Blumished" as not as sold..
to buck collectors they are one off's and highly collectable!
this is one knive club that prizes the odd and diffrent knives made !!!!
adn Joe is known to throw out in reglure production boxes oddites like
a blade with the year stamp on the WronG side, a nickel frame were it is suposed to be a brass frame ... or brass were it should be a nickel even!
i got a 112 with 25 year blade that is scearce in brass and even rarer yet -
it has finger groves!!!
opening a buck box is like opening a box o chockletts ...
ya never now's what ys is going to get!
ya only know ya will like it!

Aza, if you have what I think you have, Buck refers to those as "potato chip" knives because they are shaped like potato chips: one side is convex and bulges out on that side and the other side is concave and curves in. This often results when the stag is taken from a single piece of antler that is curved in this same manner as well. Like you, I am not fond particularly of these handles, and they most often result when you order a knife as opposed to being able to handling it prior to purchase. You most likely have two recourses. Number one, you could return it to Cabela's and ask for an exchange; they are very good at that, and that would be my first course of action. Or, numbr 2, you could return it to Joe Houser at Buck and ask him to replace the handle on the side that you dislike. I have done both over the years, with good results. Some of us are just more particular than others here, but there is nothing wrong with that, and in IMHO, you should not have to live with a knife, especially a Buck, with which you are not satified.

Thanks for the reply guys...most appreciated.

Tin Sue, I really like the pattern on both sides of the knife but I definitely think it's odd that one side sticks out more. I'm trying to figure out if I exchange it, will I get back a knife that is symetrical but has a bad pattern? Don't know...what happened in your case?

I will post up some pics if I can take some today...would someone be able to tell me how to post them?

Thanks a lot

The handles on the exchange that I received back from Cabella's were much, much nicer than the first one I received, but as Dave indicated, you never know what you're gonna get until you open the box.

I love Bucks. However, this is one of the reasons I really prefer to handle a few to see which one I like before I buy one, especially with horn/stag handles.

I understand the variation and am fine with it so long as it's not too bad. Also, I prefer a fatter handle so that's bonus points for me when I can find one that is a bit thicker than normal.

I love mine!
And I don't mind that they're uneven and unmatching.
In fact, if they did match and were the same thickness, I would be suspicious.

That's what's so great about stag....there may be other stag Buck 110's out there, but no other knife looks exactly like mine.

The differentiated stag scales also provide a surprisingly secure grip too.

Allen.

Allen...that is awesome!!! Very nice knife...nice on both sides in my opinion. If fact, one of your sides looks like one of mine. I'm really happy with the texture of the scales on mine and if it's normal that one sticks out more than the other, I will learn to appreciate it I'm sure.

I still havent taken pics of it...I will try to do that tonight after work. :)

Ok...I took pictures tonight...now can anyone give me a hint on how to actually get them on here? :)

Fat Stag

Silly me....here are the sides... I think fg's add to the value
